Product Description

This is a basic hat pattern to get you started getting used to the Universal X Loom that I designed and Cindwood modified and making. It is a new loom that you can decrease and increase from 4 directions. This concept allows for a beautifully smooth crown. No more bulk and all kinds of fancy techniques to try and get a smooth crown. The loom comes for now in a 3/8" gauge but hopefully will be available in 1/2" gauge some time in the new year. There is a formula included with the PDF explaining how to make this in any size you would like. There is video, picture, and written instructions.

What is Being Made

The X Loom Rib Brim Hat is a knitted hat designed for loom knitting using the Universal X Loom. This intermediate-level project creates a fitted hat with a customizable ribbed brim that can be styled with either a fold or a flat finish, depending on the maker's preference.

Loom Knitting Techniques

This hat is constructed using the flat knit technique, which involves the fundamental loom knitting process of tossing the bottom loop over the top loop on the pegs. The pattern employs a mathematical formula based on worsted yarn specifications to calculate the correct number of pegs needed for any head circumference size. The Universal X Loom decrease method is used for the crown closure, creating a structured finish by alternating knit rows with decrease rows until the stitches are reduced to a manageable number for drawstring closure.

Stitches Used

  • Rib Stitch: Used for the brim section, creating vertical texture and stretch. Makers can choose to work either 20 rows of rib stitch for a folded brim or 10 rows for a flat brim, depending on desired style.
  • Stockinet Stitch: The main body of the hat is worked in stockinet stitch for 44 rows, providing a smooth, classic fabric.
  • Decrease Rows: Alternating with knit rows during the crown closure to shape the hat top and reduce stitches progressively to 24, with an optional prep decrease to 12 stitches before drawstring closure.

Materials and Gauge

This pattern is formulated for aran weight yarn worked on the Universal X Loom at a gauge of 4 stitches per inch and 9 rows per inch using a 3/8" gauge setting. The pattern uses a mathematical formula to customize peg count based on individual head circumference measurements, ensuring proper fit for any size.

Pattern Structure

The X Loom Rib Brim Hat follows a logical construction sequence: the ribbed brim section is worked first with a variable number of rows, followed by the stockinet body, and finished with a crown decrease section. The pattern provides a calculation method to determine the exact number of pegs (#pegs), the number of stitches after the first decrease (#A), the repeat interval (#B), and the brim row count (#C) based on head circumference measurements.
