Product Description

This is another pattern that you can do on the x loom that will require no modular knitting, sewing, or any other fancy thing to create it. It is all one piece and is easy when compared to other patterns out there where you have to do all kinds of tricks to create this shape. I would suggest using the large 160 peg x loom but for the smaller size you can use the 120. You will need all 4 wedges and will need to be fluent in the wedge increase and wedge decrease on the universal x loom. It has a video tutorial link to make it easier to understand how to make the hat. If you are interested in the loom please check out cindwoods website to get your universal x loom.

X Loom Beret by Scarlett Royale

What Is Being Made

The X Loom Beret is a knitted hat designed using loom knitting techniques. This intermediate-level project creates a classic beret silhouette through strategic shaping and decreasing, resulting in a finished hat suitable for everyday wear.

Craft and Technique Overview

This beret is constructed using loom knitting, a technique that differs from traditional needle knitting by utilizing a circular loom with pegs. Loom knitting allows crafters to create fabric by wrapping yarn around pegs and manipulating loops without traditional knitting needles. The X Loom Beret employs specialized shaping techniques to achieve the beret's characteristic rounded crown and fitted band.

Stitches and Shaping Techniques Used

The X Loom Beret incorporates two primary loom knitting techniques for shaping:

  • Wedge Decrease (WD): This shaping method involves moving the wedge down one notch to the next set of pegs, then moving the last set of stitches over to the wedge pegs on each side. The final step requires knitting the two stitches together on the wedge pegs, which reduces the stitch count and creates the tapered crown characteristic of a beret.
  • Wedge Increase (WI): This more complex technique requires multiple steps to expand the fabric. The process includes twin knitting the first wedge peg, moving the created stitch to the previous peg, knitting the two wedge pegs together, twin knitting the next peg beside the wedge peg, and moving the resulting stitch to the second wedge peg. The technique continues with knitting the peg beside the second wedge peg, then moving the wedge up one set of pegs and placing extra loops onto empty pegs beside each wedge peg to create the necessary expansion.

Materials and Equipment

The X Loom Beret requires specific loom knitting supplies:

  • Loom: A 160-peg 3/8" gauge universal S loom is the primary tool (a 120-peg X loom serves as an alternative for a smaller finished size)
  • Yarn: 100 yards of worsted weight yarn in the color of your choice
  • Tools: A looming hook for manipulating stitches and a crafter's needle for finishing

Difficulty Level

This project is rated as intermediate, making it suitable for loom knitters with some experience. The wedge increase and wedge decrease techniques require practice and attention to detail, though the video tutorial provides visual guidance for each step.
