Wyntreaux Bolero/Poncho by OGE Knitwear Designs
What is Being Made
The Wyntreaux Bolero/Poncho is a versatile layering piece designed for infants, available in two sizes to fit ages 6-12 months and 12-18 months. This garment functions as both a bolero and poncho style, offering flexible styling options for babies. The piece features a buttoned closure at the neck and measures approximately 23-25 cm (9¼-10 inches) in length from the neck button to hem, with actual chest measurements of 54.5-56.5 cm (21½-22¼ inches) when buttoned.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
This intermediate-level knitting project uses circular needles to construct the garment, which allows for seamless or nearly seamless construction typical of modern knitwear design. The pattern is worked in a stitch pattern rather than stockinette stitch alone, adding visual interest and texture to the finished piece. Stitch markers are used throughout the knitting process to help track pattern repeats and shaping increases or decreases. The use of 60cm long circular needles or extra long straight needles accommodates the width of the garment during construction.
Stitches and Pattern Details
The Wyntreaux is worked in a pattern stitch on 4mm needles, creating a fabric with specific drape and texture characteristics. The stitch pattern is worked to a tension of 20 stitches by 30 rows over 10cm (4 inches), which is essential for achieving the correct finished measurements. Achieving proper gauge is critical for this intermediate project, as variations in tension will affect the final fit and proportions of the bolero/poncho.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
This pattern calls for 8ply DK (Double Knit) weight yarn, which is a light worsted or sport weight classification. The yardage requirements are approximately 350-400 metres (383-438 yards) depending on the size being knitted. The pattern specifies 4mm (US 6 / UK 8) circular needles, 60cm in length, or alternatively extra long straight needles of the same gauge. One button is required for the neck closure. The DK weight yarn paired with 4mm needles creates a fabric with good drape suitable for a baby garment that will be comfortable and not too heavy.
Pattern Notes
This is a downloadable PDF pattern from independent designer OGE Knitwear Designs. The pattern includes sizing information and detailed instructions for completing the garment. As with all hand-knitted items, individual variations in tension and technique may result in slightly different finished measurements, and using the specified yarn weight is important for achieving the intended gauge and fit.
