Product Description
This peaked cap is styled on the traditional men's driving cap or Field cap, but for women's sizing. The yarn used can make a difference in the sizing: using an aran yarn may give you a larger man-sized cap whereas the Patons Classic Wool Worsted recommended should result in a cap that will fit anyone with a 22" size measured on an angle from the back neck, over the ears, and mid-way up the forehead. The band should be a bit too snug at first, but will relax with wearing and do a good job of blocking the wind. Other worsted weight yarns can be used provided they are soft enough to wear against the forehead.
Erratum: Total stitch count after increases should be 153.
Women's Peaked Cap by Dal Riata Knits
What is Being Made
This is a women's peaked cap designed by Dal Riata Knits, derived from a traditional flat-knit man's cap and reimagined for modern construction. The cap is engineered to fit a standard women's head size of 22 inches, measured on an angle from the back neck, over the ears, and mid-way up the forehead. The design features a structured peak and a snug band that relaxes with wearing, providing effective wind protection while maintaining a flattering fit.
Construction Technique
The Women's Peaked Cap is knit in-the-round, a modern construction method that eliminates seaming and creates a seamless, tubular fabric. This technique differs from the original flat-knit traditional cap it was adapted from, making the pattern more accessible to contemporary knitters. The in-the-round construction allows for continuous circular knitting, which produces a more refined finished garment with superior fit and comfort.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques
The pattern employs fundamental knitting stitches worked in stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric with visible V-shaped stitches on the right side. The pattern includes specific increase techniques, such as k1b (knit one below), which lifts the loop of the stitch below the next knit stitch to create new stitches for shaping. These increases are strategically placed to create the cap's structure and the characteristic peaked crown.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
The Women's Peaked Cap requires 100-200 grams of Patons Classic Wool Worsted, equivalent to 1-2 skeins of this worsted-weight yarn. The choice of yarn weight significantly impacts the final sizing: using an aran yarn may produce a larger, man-sized cap, whereas Patons Classic Wool Worsted is specifically recommended to achieve the intended women's sizing. The pattern notes that yarn selection directly influences fit and drape.
Needles and Tools
Knitters will need Size 4 mm and 4.5 mm needles for working in the round, typically circular needles or double-pointed needles suitable for small circumference knitting. Additional tools include 9 locking stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping, a row counter for tracking progress, a tape measure for checking gauge and fit, and a yarn needle for weaving in ends. A crochet hook is listed as optional, likely for picking up dropped stitches if needed.
Interfacing and Structure
To maintain the cap's peaked shape and structure, the pattern incorporates interfacing material inserted into the peak. Knitters may choose from flexible foam, silicone, vinyl, or plastic interfacing, allowing customization based on desired stiffness and drape. This interfacing ensures the peak maintains its form and provides the structured appearance characteristic of a traditional peaked cap.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a standard gauge of 18 stitches by 24 rows equals 4 inches in stockinette stitch. Achieving this gauge is essential for proper sizing, as the cap is designed to fit a 22-inch head circumference. Knitters should swatch and measure their gauge before beginning the project to ensure the finished cap will fit as intended.
Difficulty Level
This Women's Peaked Cap is rated as an intermediate-level knitting project, suitable for knitters with foundational skills in knitting in-the-round, working with stitch markers, and executing increases. The pattern assumes familiarity with basic knitting techniques and circular needle construction, making it an excellent project for knitters looking to expand their skills beyond simple flat-knit garments.
