Product Description

I really had a lot of fun with this design. I took apart a stitch, and then put it back together again, in the shawl, piece by piece. I really like the way everything lines up. You get a little lace and then a little texture. I've worked this up in a single color, and in three colors. Both look great.

I really love Marianated Yarns, the colors are so beautiful. I had trouble choosing. I went with Glacial Lake to show off the texture.

With Every Drop of Rain That Falls Shawl

What Is Being Made

With Every Drop of Rain That Falls is an intermediate-level triangular shawl design created by Mary Triplett. This knitted shawl features a finished measurement of 64 inches wide by 17½ inches deep, making it a generous wrap suitable for layering or draping. The design showcases a thoughtful balance of lace and textured stitching throughout the piece, creating visual interest and dimension.

Design Concept and Technique

Mary Triplett describes this shawl as a creative exploration in stitch construction. The designer took apart an existing stitch pattern and reconstructed it piece by piece throughout the shawl, resulting in a cohesive design where every element aligns purposefully. This approach creates a dynamic interplay between open lace sections and textured areas, offering both visual appeal and structural interest. The shawl has been successfully worked in both single-color and three-color variations, with each colorway presenting its own aesthetic charm.

Stitches and Increases

The shawl employs a systematic increase pattern that adds six stitches every two rows—three stitches on each side—allowing the triangular shape to develop evenly from the top down. The pattern incorporates Stockinette Stitch as a foundational element, combined with lace motifs created through yarn overs and decreases. The construction includes three distinct edges on each side, with specific edge treatments worked on wrong-side rows using purl stitches and yarn overs to create finished selvage edges.

Yarn and Materials

This pattern calls for Marianated Yarns Practicality, a fingering-weight yarn composed of 75% Superwash Merino and 25% Nylon. The yarn provides both softness and durability, with the nylon content adding resilience to the finished garment. The recommended yardage is 926 yards total, requiring two skeins of 463 yards each at 100 grams per skein. The pattern was originally worked in the colorway Glacial Lake, which the designer selected to best showcase the texture and stitch definition throughout the shawl.

Needles and Gauge

The shawl is worked on a US #3 circular needle measuring 32 inches in length. The recommended gauge is 28 stitches and 34 rows over 4 inches in Stockinette Stitch. Achieving proper gauge is important for obtaining the correct finished dimensions and ensuring the shawl drapes appropriately.

Skill Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with some experience who are comfortable with basic increases, yarn overs, and reading stitch patterns. The systematic nature of the increases and the repetitive stitch pattern make it an accessible project for advancing knitters.
