Winter Wishes Christmas Teddy Bear by Andrew Lucas

What Is Being Made

This is a beginner-friendly knitted Christmas teddy bear toy, designed to measure approximately 15 centimeters in height. The project creates a soft, stuffed plush bear perfect for holiday decorations or as a small gift. The bear features a distinct body and head structure, constructed entirely through knitting techniques.

Craft and Primary Technique

This is a knitting project suitable for beginners. The design uses fundamental knitting methods to create a three-dimensional toy through strategic increases and decreases that shape the bear's form. The pattern demonstrates how basic knitting techniques can be combined to produce a finished stuffed animal without requiring advanced skills.

Stitches Used

  • Stocking Stitch (st st) – The primary stitch throughout the pattern, created by alternating knit rows and purl rows to produce a smooth, flat fabric with a distinctive V-pattern appearance
  • Garter Stitch (gs) – A textured knit stitch used selectively in the pattern
  • Increases (inc) – Used to expand stitch counts and create the bear's wider sections, particularly for shaping the body and head
  • Decreases (dec) – Applied to reduce stitch counts and form the bear's narrower areas, including the shoulders and head shaping
  • Knit 2 Together (K2 tog) – A decrease technique used at the shoulders and head to taper the toy's proportions
  • Purl 2 Together (p2tog) – Another decrease method employed for head shaping
  • Bind and Tie (B and T) – A finishing technique where the remaining stitches are drawn up and secured by threading the yarn end through a tapestry needle

Materials Required

The project uses 3.25mm knitting needles as the primary tool. Yarn consists of double knitting wool in multiple colors: yellow (for the main body), pink, blue, and black (for details and features). Oddments of these colors are sufficient, making this an economical project ideal for using leftover yarn. Additionally, a small amount of polyester or similar stuffing is needed to fill the completed bear and give it dimension, along with a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and executing the bind-and-tie finishing technique.

Pattern Structure and Construction

The bear is constructed in two main sections: the body and the head. The body begins by casting on 25 stitches using yellow wool and immediately increasing in every stitch to reach 50 stitches, creating a wide foundation. Stocking stitch is then worked for 21 rows to establish the body's length. The shoulders are formed by knitting 2 stitches together across the entire row, reducing back to 25 stitches. The head section begins with strategic increases that expand the stitch count to 37 stitches, followed by 17 rows of stocking stitch for the head's height. The head is then gradually decreased through multiple rows using knit 2 together and purl 2 together techniques, eventually reducing to just 13 stitches. The remaining stitches are bound off by threading them onto a tapestry needle and drawing them tight to close the top of the head.

Skill Level and Suitability

Classified as a beginner project, this Christmas teddy bear is ideal for knitters new to toy-making or those learning to work with increases and decreases. The pattern uses only essential abbreviations and straightforward shaping techniques, making it accessible to those with basic knitting knowledge of knit and purl stitches.
