Product Description
Those winters nights are coming up quick now with it almost being October! Plus, who does not love a good blanket to cuddle up with in those fall/winter days and nights
In my house, we have at least three blankets most rooms and take our favorite ones with us throughout the whole house. We love a good blanket and the cats definitely agree with us.
The Winter Nights Afghan is made using a fun wave like stitch and two colors (one extra one for the border or you can use one of the colors throughout the blanket). You will bring up the yarn as you are working on the blanket and then the border will cover up those strands.
Winter Nights Afghan by Megan Gebhard
Project Overview
The Winter Nights Afghan is a beginner-friendly crochet blanket and throw designed by Megan Gebhard. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a finished blanket measuring 38.5 by 56 inches, making it an ideal size for draping over furniture or using as a cozy lap throw during cold winter months.
What Is Being Made
This project is a rectangular crochet afghan or throw blanket. The finished piece measures 38.5 inches wide by 56 inches long, providing generous coverage for various uses including bed throws, sofa blankets, or decorative home accents.
Crochet Techniques Used
The Winter Nights Afghan employs several fundamental crochet techniques suitable for beginners. The pattern uses a color-changing method where yarn is carried up along the edges between rows, allowing for smooth transitions between colors without cutting and rejoining yarn. The border is worked separately and covers the carried yarn on the edges, creating a finished appearance. The pattern features an alternating color stripe pattern, with each color worked for two consecutive rows before switching to the next color.
Crochet Stitches Used
- Chain stitch (ch) - Used to create the foundation and turning chains at the beginning of rows
- Single crochet (sc) - A short, tight stitch used throughout the pattern for structure and texture variation
- Half double crochet (hdc) - A medium-height stitch that adds dimension to the fabric
- Double crochet (dc) - A taller stitch used in groups of three to create visual interest and openness in the pattern
- Slip stitch (sl st) - Used for joining and finishing edges
Stitch Pattern Details
The pattern begins with a foundation chain of 73 stitches. The main stitch pattern repeats across each row using a combination of single crochet, half double crochet, and double crochet stitches in a specific sequence. The pattern notes that chaining ups at the beginning of rows count as stitches, which is important for maintaining proper stitch counts and finished dimensions. The gauge is 8 stitches and 6 rows per 4 inches, which helps ensure the blanket reaches its intended finished measurements.
Materials and Tools
The Winter Nights Afghan uses super chunky weight yarn, specifically Bernat Blanket Yarn, which creates a thick, cozy fabric that works up quickly. The yarn requirements include:
- Color A (Burgundy Plum) - 2 skeins or 440 yards
- Color B (Vintage White) - 2 skeins or 440 yards
- Color C (Grey) - 1 skein or 50 yards
The project requires an 8 mm or L/11 crochet hook, which is appropriately sized for working with super chunky yarn. Additional supplies include scissors and a yarn needle for weaving in ends and finishing the blanket.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as beginner level, making it an excellent choice for new crocheters or those looking for a quick, satisfying project. The use of basic stitches, straightforward color changes, and a simple repeating pattern make this afghan accessible to crafters developing their foundational crochet skills.
