Winter Jewels Lapghan by Crochet Cloudberry
Project Overview
The Winter Jewels Lapghan is an intermediate-level crochet blanket and throw project designed by Catherine Venner of Crochet Cloudberry. This downloadable PDF pattern guides crafters through creating a multi-square lapghan using a modular construction method, where individual squares are joined together and finished with a coordinating border.
What Is Being Made
This project produces a lapghan—a smaller blanket or throw sized piece perfect for draping over laps or furniture. The lapghan is constructed from multiple crochet squares that are joined together and unified with a full blanket border. The finished piece combines visual interest through varied square designs while maintaining cohesion through the border treatment.
Design and Layout Options
The Winter Jewels Lapghan offers flexibility in how squares are arranged. Crafters can choose between two layout approaches:
- Grouping all squares of the same design together in blocks of four squares
- Creating blocks of four squares with one square of each design mixed throughout
This customization allows each maker to personalize their lapghan based on preference and color placement.
Crochet Techniques Used
The pattern employs modular crochet construction, a technique where individual squares are crocheted separately and then joined together. This method is popular for blanket projects as it allows for portability and flexibility in assembly. The pattern uses UK terminology for all stitch abbreviations and instructions.
Square joining is accomplished through crochet techniques that connect the edges of completed squares. The pattern then incorporates a full blanket border worked around the perimeter of the joined squares, which serves both a functional and aesthetic purpose. The border helps square off edges that may appear uneven before blocking, creating clean, straight lines in the finished piece.
Stitches and Stitch Work
While the PDF excerpt does not detail every individual stitch used throughout the pattern, the construction involves standard crochet stitches worked in rounds for the individual squares. The final round of each square is specifically noted in the pattern, indicating careful stitch counting for proper joining. The border is worked as a continuous round around the entire joined blanket.
Materials: Yarn and Tools
The Winter Jewels Lapghan is worked in DK weight yarn, a lightweight yarn that creates a fabric with good drape and definition of stitch detail. DK weight is ideal for blanket projects as it provides warmth without excessive bulk. Crafters will need an appropriate crochet hook sized for DK yarn, typically in the range of 3.5–4mm depending on personal tension and desired fabric density. The pattern is provided in downloadable PDF format for easy reference while working.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate difficulty, this lapghan project is suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle multi-part construction. The modular square method and joining techniques require understanding of how to work in rounds and connect pieces, making it an excellent project for building confidence in more complex blanket construction.
Pattern Notes
The pattern is presented using UK crochet terminology. Crafters should note that individual squares may not appear to have perfectly straight edges when first joined; this is normal and will be corrected through the application of the full border and blocking process. Proper blocking at the end ensures a professional, finished appearance with even edges and square corners.
