For the eyes I’ve used 8 mm animal eyes. You will also need fibrefill and pellets for a bit of extra weight in the body (I use Hama beads). Lopi colour numbers: 1401 or 0867, 1419, 0051 and 005

Windu the Horse Crochet Pattern

What Is Being Made

Windu is an amigurumi-style crocheted toy horse designed by Sonja van der Wijk (Son's Popkes). This downloadable crochet pattern creates a finished horse approximately 6 inches (15.5 cm) tall, making it a small decorative or play toy suitable for intermediate crocheters.

Craft and Technique

This project uses crochet as the primary construction method. The horse is worked in the round using spiral techniques, which means you crochet continuously in circular rows rather than joining at the end of each round. The pattern recommends using a stitch marker to track the beginning of each round, moving it up as you progress through the work.

The pattern includes color changes throughout the design. Complex color transitions are indicated using color coding within the written instructions to make them easier to follow. Simpler color changes are noted after each round description. When changing colors, you work the color change into the final loop of a stitch, ensuring the new color appears on your hook as you begin the next round.

Stitches Used

While the complete stitch list is not fully detailed in the provided content, the pattern uses standard American crochet terminology and techniques appropriate for amigurumi construction, including increases and decreases worked in spirals to shape the horse's body, legs, head, and other features.

Materials and Yarn

The pattern is designed to work with aran weight yarn. The designer specifically recommends using a fuzzy yarn for the best aesthetic results. The yarn used in the original design is Istex Lètt lopi, which is 100% wool and provides the characteristic soft, textured appearance suitable for toy animals.

You will need a crochet hook appropriate for aran weight yarn (typically a size H/8mm or I/9mm, though the exact size may vary based on your tension). A stitch marker is also recommended to track rounds as you work in spirals.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty. It requires familiarity with basic crochet stitches and techniques, as well as comfort working with color changes and shaping amigurumi pieces. The spiral construction and color-coding system make it accessible for crocheters with some experience.

Pattern Format

Windu is provided as a downloadable PDF, allowing you to access the full instructions, stitch counts, and color-change details on your device or printed copy while you work.

I love LoveCrafts

Another great Sons Popkes animal. i had a request for a crochet horse from a work colleague and this was the only realuistic one i could find. i am going to change the colours so it looks like her horse. The only thing i sometimes find challenging when i am changing colours, is knowing where the row starts - e.g. the first stitch in a row is under the middle of the chin, or on the top of the head or on the right side of the head - this would be a very helpful addition.
