Windflower Doily by Sophia Hoang

Project Overview

The Windflower Doily is an advanced crochet decoration project designed by Sophia Hoang. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a delicate, lace-like doily measuring 10 inches (25 cm) in diameter, perfect for adding an elegant decorative touch to home décor, furniture, or display pieces.

Craft and Technique

This project is created entirely using crochet techniques. The pattern employs advanced crochet methods including chainless crochet stitches such as Chainless Single Crochet (CSDC) and Chainless Single Treble (CSTR), which create a more seamless and professional appearance compared to traditional chain-based foundations. These specialized stitches count as the first stitch of each round, allowing for smoother transitions and a more refined finished product.

The pattern uses American English crochet terminology and incorporates the Magic Loop technique to begin the project. Pattern repeats are clearly marked in bold text throughout the instructions, making it easier to follow the rhythmic sequences that build the doily's structure.

Stitches and Stitch Work

While the PDF content provided references advanced stitches including Chainless Single Crochet (CSDC) and Chainless Single Treble (CSTR), the complete stitch list is detailed within the full pattern document. The design uses slip stitch (SLST) joins to connect rounds seamlessly. The pattern structure relies on repeating stitch sequences that build outward from the center, creating the characteristic floral-inspired Windflower design.

Materials and Tools

The Windflower Doily requires the following materials and equipment:

  • Yarn/Thread: 250 yards (229 meters) of size 10 crochet thread. The pattern specifies Rico Essentials Crochet Thread in Smokey Rose as the designer's choice, though other size 10 threads in similar weights may be substituted based on personal preference and color selection.
  • Hook: A 1.75 mm crochet hook is recommended as the primary size. However, hook selection should be adjusted based on individual tension: if your tension is loose, use a 1.5 mm hook instead. The designer notes that her tension runs slightly tight, so gauge adjustment is important for achieving the intended finished size.
  • Finishing Tools: Scissors for trimming yarn ends and a darning needle for weaving in ends securely.
  • Optional Aids: Stitch markers to help track pattern repeats and round beginnings.

Yarn Weight and Material Characteristics

This pattern uses cobweb and lace weight materials in the form of size 10 crochet thread. These ultra-fine weights create an intricate, delicate fabric with excellent drape and transparency, ideal for decorative doilies. The lightweight nature of these materials allows the stitch definition to shine, showcasing the complex Windflower pattern details.

Difficulty Level and Pattern Format

The Windflower Doily is rated as an advanced crochet project, requiring solid foundational crochet skills and comfort with specialized techniques like chainless stitches and the Magic Loop method. This is not a beginner project. The downloadable PDF format is printer-friendly on U.S. letter-sized paper, allowing crafters to print and reference the pattern while working. The designer provides additional tutorial resources on her blog for completing the more complex stitches featured in this pattern.

Design Credit and Support

The Windflower Doily is an original design by Sophia Hoang. Crafters with questions about the pattern or who encounter any issues are encouraged to contact the designer directly for assistance and support.
