Product Description
Nature in all its beauty and glory gives us great life lessons and trees have forever been a source of a lot of wisdom. This cowl has been inspired by Bruce Lee’s quote that inspires us to ride with the tide and go with the flow.
“Notice that the stiffest tree is most easily cracked, while the bamboo or willow survives by bending with the wind.” With an intriguing braid-like design reminiscent of willow branches, the Willow River Cowl is warm and cozy. Paired with a jeans jacket, this cowl will keep out the chill on a late evening walk along the river.
The cowl is worked flat in one piece beginning with an I-cord Cast-On and fastened with buttons. The cable pattern is both written and charted.

Project Overview
The Willow River Cowl is an intermediate-level knitted neck warmer inspired by nature and the philosophy of flexibility. Drawing inspiration from Bruce Lee's wisdom about willow trees bending with the wind rather than breaking under pressure, this cowl features a distinctive braid-like design that evokes the graceful movement of willow branches. The finished cowl measures 26 inches in circumference by 10 inches in height, making it an ideal accessory for layering over casual outfits during cool weather.
What You'll Create
This is a cowl—a tubular neckwear accessory that slips over the head and drapes around the shoulders and neck. The Willow River Cowl combines warmth and visual interest through its textured construction, making it suitable for pairing with casual garments like denim jackets for evening walks or everyday wear during transitional seasons.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
The Willow River Cowl employs several specialized knitting techniques that elevate it to intermediate difficulty:
- Cable Stitches: The signature braid-like pattern is created using cable stitches, specifically the C3b (cable 3 back) stitch. This technique involves slipping one stitch to a cable needle, holding it to the back of the work, knitting two stitches from the left needle, then knitting the stitch from the cable needle. This creates the interlocking, rope-like appearance reminiscent of willow branches.
- Knitting Without Cable Needles: The pattern includes instruction for executing cable stitches without traditional cable needles, offering flexibility in your tool choices and demonstrating an alternative approach to creating textured cables.
- I-cord Cast-On: The cowl begins with an I-cord cast-on, a decorative and elastic edge technique that creates a neat, finished appearance at the beginning of the project.
- I-cord Bind-Off: The cowl finishes with an I-cord bind-off, ensuring a matching decorative edge that complements the cast-on and provides structure to the finished piece.
- Circular Knitting: This cowl is worked in the round using circular needles, creating a seamless tubular construction without the need for seaming.
Materials Required
Yarn: Malabrigo Yarn Worsted weight is specified for this project. The yarn is 100% Merino fiber, offering softness and breathability alongside warmth. Each ball contains 210 yards (192 meters) and weighs 100 grams. The project requires 2 balls in the Polar Morn colorway, providing sufficient yardage for the finished 26-inch circumference cowl.
Needles: US 7 (4.5 mm) circular needles in 32-inch length are required. Circular needles are essential for this in-the-round construction and allow for comfortable knitting of the tubular cowl shape.
Yarn Weight and Finished Fabric
The worsted and aran weight yarns specified for this project create a fabric with excellent drape and insulation. Merino wool provides natural temperature regulation, moisture-wicking properties, and a luxurious feel against the skin, making this cowl both functional and comfortable for extended wear.
