These panels are separated by a gradually increasing number of garter stitch rows and appear at a diagonal on the shawl. The original size of the pattern also makes this a perfect scarf option.

Final measurements (blocked): 71 inches wide at the top edge by 40 inches on the side edges; 20 inches deep at center. The pattern can be continued as desired to an increased length. The original size of the pattern also makes this a perfect scarf option.

This pattern was designed for use with Cedar Hill Farm Company’s JOURNEY, a 4-ply superwash merino fingering weight yarn.

Wicker Shawl by Keya Kuhn

What is Being Made

Wicker is an asymmetrical, seamless knitted shawl designed by Keya Kuhn in 2015. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a triangular wrap with finished measurements of 71 inches wide by 20 inches deep, with each right and left side measuring 40 inches. The shawl features a distinctive design that can be customized to larger dimensions by continuing garter stitch rows beyond the pattern specifications.

Techniques Used

This shawl is worked flat using a fully charted pattern that combines written instructions with stitch charts, requiring knitters to reference both simultaneously throughout the project. The pattern employs the long-tail cast-on method for the initial stitches. The shawl's construction is seamless, meaning all pieces are created in one continuous knitting process without requiring seaming. A key design feature involves openwork panels that create decorative lace sections throughout the garment, adding visual interest and drape to the finished piece.

Stitches Used

The primary stitch structure utilizes garter stitch, which is created by knitting every row. This fundamental stitch provides a dense, textured fabric with excellent drape characteristics. The openwork panels incorporate lace stitches that are detailed in the pattern charts, creating contrast against the solid garter stitch sections. The combination of these stitch types produces the shawl's distinctive wicker-like texture and appearance.
