White Hooded Baby Blanket Crochet Pattern by Olga Poltava
What is Being Made
This is a hooded baby blanket designed by Olga Poltava, a cozy and functional crochet project perfect for infants and young children. The finished blanket measures approximately 33 by 33 inches square, making it an ideal size for wrapping, warmth, and portability. The integrated hood adds practical comfort, allowing the blanket to double as a wearable wrap or cover-up for babies.
Craft and Techniques
This is a crochet project classified as intermediate skill level, suitable for crafters with foundational crochet knowledge who are ready to tackle slightly more complex construction. The pattern uses US crochet terminology and employs fundamental crochet techniques combined into a structured design. The blanket construction begins with a foundation chain that sets the width of the piece, with flexibility built into the pattern to accommodate different yarn weights and thicknesses.
Stitches Used
The Hooded Baby Blanket pattern utilizes the following essential crochet stitches:
- Chain stitch (ch) – used to create the foundation and throughout the pattern for structure
- Slip stitch (sl st) – used to join rounds and create seamless transitions
- Single crochet (sc) – a tight, dense stitch that provides structure and stability
- Half double crochet (hdc) – a medium-height stitch offering balance between density and drape
- Double crochet (dc) – a taller stitch that creates lighter, more open fabric areas
The pattern uses repeat instructions marked with asterisks (*) to efficiently convey stitch sequences, allowing crafters to work through sections systematically.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
This project requires worsted weight yarn in a total of approximately 1400 yards. The pattern was designed using 100% acrylic yarn (specifically Craft Smart Never Enough Yarn, requiring 2 skeins of 716 yards each). A US hook size H/8 (5 mm) crochet hook is required for this pattern. The acrylic fiber choice makes this blanket durable, easy to care for, and budget-friendly for a baby item. The pattern notes that gauge is not critical, offering flexibility for crafters using different yarn brands or weights – adjustments can be made by chaining more or fewer stitches and measuring the foundation chain length to achieve the desired width before beginning the main body of the blanket.
