Product Description
This submarine toy has a propellor that turns round for fun playtime. Techniques used in this pattern include knitting stripes, and simple increases and decreases for shaping. Designed by Amanda Berry @fluffandfuzz, the submarine is knitted in acrylic DK yarns on single pointed needles (not in the round). For confident beginners and above, other techniques used include casting on and off, knits, purls, increases and decreases, a little embroidery decoration and seaming to finish.
Whirly Submarine Knitting Pattern by Amanda Berry
What is Being Made
The Whirly Submarine is a knitted toy design created by Amanda Berry. This intermediate-level knitting project produces a three-dimensional submarine figure suitable for play or display. The finished toy is constructed entirely through knitting techniques and requires stuffing to achieve its dimensional form.
Yarn Materials
This pattern calls for 100% acrylic DK yarn (also known as double knitting or light worsted weight, 8 ply). You will need approximately 50g each in three color shades: Yellow, White, and Grey. The original sample was knitted in discontinued acrylic DK yarns. Hayfield Bonus DK or similar DK weight 100% acrylic yarns are recommended as suitable substitutes for recreating this design.
Needles and Notions
- A pair of 3.5mm (US 4) single pointed needles, minimum length 20cm
- A darning or tapestry needle for seaming
- A 200g bag of toy filling for stuffing
- One 20mm diameter 2-hole white button (with holes large enough to accommodate a darning or tapestry needle)
Knitting Techniques and Construction
As an intermediate-level knitting pattern, the Whirly Submarine employs fundamental knitting construction methods. The toy is knitted in separate pieces using single pointed needles, then assembled through seaming with a tapestry needle. The multi-color design requires working with three different yarn shades—Yellow, White, and Grey—to create visual interest and definition. The finished knitted pieces are stuffed with toy filling to create a three-dimensional form, and a button detail is incorporated into the final assembly.
