What Is Being Made
The Where the Waves Meet Shawl is a crescent-shaped knit shawl designed by Juliana Lustenader. This intermediate-level project measures 58 inches long from point to point and 17 inches deep from top to bottom, making it a generous accessory suitable for layering or draping.
Construction Method
This shawl is knit flat from the top down, beginning with a garter tab cast-on. The crescent shape is created naturally through yarn over increases positioned at the beginning and end of every row, which allow the fabric to expand gradually as you work downward toward the finished edges.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
The Where the Waves Meet Shawl employs several fundamental knitting techniques suitable for intermediate crafters:
- Stockinette Stitch – The primary stitch used throughout the body of the shawl, creating a smooth, classic fabric
- Garter Stitch – Used for the initial tab cast-on to create a sturdy foundation
- Yarn Over Increases – Worked at the beginning and end of every row to shape the crescent silhouette
- Simple Lace – Stockinette eyelets incorporated into the pattern for visual interest and texture
- Decreases – Used as needed within the lace pattern work
- Picking Up Stitches – Required for transitioning between sections
Yarn and Materials
The pattern calls for 440 yards total of worsted weight yarn. The original design features 2 skeins of Royal Bee Yarn Company's Purple Couch Collection worsted weight yarn (3.53 oz/100 g per skein, 220 yards per skein, 100% Merino Wool) in the colorway "Nina says have your teal cake and eat it too!" However, any worsted weight yarn that achieves the specified gauge will work for this project.
Needles and Notions
Construction requires US size #9 (5.5 mm) circular needles measuring 60 inches in length for knitting flat. Additional materials include 2 stitch markers to track pattern repeats and shaping points, and a darning needle for weaving in yarn ends.
Gauge
The pattern is worked to a gauge of 15 stitches by 26 rows over 4 inches in Stockinette Stitch after blocking. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the finished dimensions and ensuring the shawl drapes as intended.
Skill Requirements
This intermediate-level project requires competency with yarn over increases, decreases, simple lace pattern reading, knitting flat on circular needles, and picking up stitches. Crafters should be comfortable following a stitch pattern and managing shaping increases throughout the project.
