Product Description

This is suitable for adventurous beginners, as all you need to know is how to do the back post stitch.  If you need some help, here’s a link for you, it explains both US and UK equivalent terms. This pattern uses UK terminology.

https://www.lovecrochet.com/us/how-to-back-post-double-stitch?country=US

You can make this square with any yarn you like, just choose the right hook for it of course.  I’ve made mine with DK cotton and I used a 4mm hook. D

Wendy's Window Square by Brenda Makin

What Is Being Made

Wendy's Window Square is a decorative crochet motif designed by Brenda Makin. This square measures 11x11cm when completed and features a distinctive window-like pattern formed through strategic stitch placement. The design creates a cross formation between four sections, making it suitable for use as a standalone granny square, blanket component, or decorative accent piece.

Difficulty Level and Suitability

Classified as an adventurous beginner project, Wendy's Window Square is accessible to crocheters with basic foundational skills. The pattern requires knowledge of only one specialized technique: the back post stitch. This focused skill requirement makes it an excellent choice for crafters looking to expand their technical abilities without overwhelming complexity. The pattern uses UK crochet terminology throughout.

Crochet Techniques and Stitches

The primary technique featured in this pattern is the back post stitch, which creates dimensional texture and visual interest. This stitch works around the post of stitches from previous rows rather than into the top loops, resulting in the characteristic raised appearance that defines the window motif.

  • Chain stitch (ch) – Used to create the foundation and spacing elements
  • Slip stitch (ss) – Used to join rounds and close sections
  • Treble stitch (tr) – Provides height and structure to the square
  • Back post stitch – The signature technique that creates dimensional texture and the window pattern effect

Materials and Yarn Specifications

Wendy's Window Square accommodates flexibility in yarn selection, allowing crafters to choose based on personal preference and project goals. The pattern works with DK weight and sport weight yarns, providing options for different finished densities and drape.

The designer's sample was created using:

  • Rico Essentials Cotton DK in Plum (Color A)
  • Cascade Ultra Pima Fine in White (Color B)
  • Rico Essentials Cotton DK in Turquoise (Color C)
  • 4mm crochet hook – appropriately sized for DK weight yarn

The pattern emphasizes that yarn choice flexibility allows crafters to select the appropriate hook size based on their chosen yarn weight, ensuring proper gauge and finished dimensions.

Pattern Structure

The pattern begins with a chain foundation and slip stitch join, establishing the base for the square's construction. The initial rows build the cross formation through strategic placement of treble stitches and chain spaces. The back post stitch technique is then applied to create the dimensional window effect that defines the square's visual character.

Color Options

The designer's version features a three-color combination: Plum, White, and Turquoise. This multi-color approach creates visual contrast and highlights the window pattern. Crafters are encouraged to experiment with their own color selections to match personal preferences or coordinate with larger projects.
