Product Description

Though I love wrapping myself with long thick scarves, having to daily walk two big dogs (so my hands are full), makes wrapped scarves that slip off very annoying. So a cowl is perfect for me. It keeps me warm, and I don't have to bother with it. The cowl is basically a one size fits all-type. However, I have included how you can make it bigger or narrower if you want. The pattern, both in English and in Dutch, are completely written out, row by row. But there’s also an easy chart to follow, if you prefer charts. For your convenience, I have made this pattern with a text and chart in black and white, like you would normally come across. But I’ve also added a colourcoded version, for those who would like a little help differentiating the different cables.

All you need is a circular needle that can fit 70 cm of stitches, and a cable needle, if you use one.

Wellington Cowl by Jane James Knitwear

Project Overview

The Wellington Cowl is an intermediate-level knitted cowl designed by Jane James Knitwear. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a cozy neck accessory featuring cable stitch detailing, perfect for knitters seeking a project that combines classic techniques with modern styling.

What is Being Made

The Wellington Cowl is a tubular neck warmer measuring approximately 70 cm in circumference and 35 cm in height. This cowl-style accessory is worked in the round, creating a seamless, continuous loop ideal for wrapping around the neck for warmth and comfort.

Techniques Used

This pattern employs circular knitting techniques, worked in the round to create a seamless construction. The primary technique featured throughout the Wellington Cowl is cable knitting, which creates raised, twisted stitch patterns that add visual interest and textural depth to the finished piece. Cable work requires the use of a cable needle to temporarily hold stitches while crossing them over other stitches, a fundamental skill for intermediate knitters.

Stitches and Stitch Abbreviations

The Wellington Cowl utilizes the following stitches and abbreviations:

  • K2: Knit 2 stitches
  • P1: Purl 1 stitch
  • C4F: Cable 4 Front - Slip 2 stitches onto cable needle and hold in front, knit 2 stitches, then knit 2 stitches from cable needle
  • C4Fp: Cable 4 Front Purl - Slip 2 stitches onto cable needle and hold in front, purl 2 stitches, then knit 2 stitches from cable needle
  • C4B: Cable 4 Back - Slip 2 stitches onto cable needle and hold in back, knit 2 stitches, then knit 2 stitches from cable needle
  • C4Bp: Cable 4 Back Purl - Slip 2 stitches onto cable needle and hold in back, knit 2 stitches, then purl 2 stitches from cable needle
  • ** **: Repeat the stitches between the asterisks as indicated in pattern instructions

Materials Required

The Wellington Cowl pattern calls for 2 balls of Milly yarn from Borgo de Pazzi, with each ball weighing 100 grams and containing approximately 270 meters of yarn. The yarn composition is 50% wool, 25% acrylic, and 25% polyester, classified as DK weight (Double Knitting), a versatile medium weight suitable for various garment types.

Additional tools required include 4 mm circular needles for working the cowl in the round, a cable needle for executing the cable stitches, and a row counter (or alternative tracking method such as pen and paper) to keep track of pattern rows during construction.

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern specifies a gauge of 22 stitches by 31 rows over a 10 by 10 centimeter swatch worked in the cable pattern. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for obtaining the intended finished measurements of approximately 70 centimeters in circumference and 35 centimeters in height.

Pattern Format

This downloadable PDF pattern is presented in both traditional text format with written instructions and a black-and-white chart format for visual reference. Additionally, a color-coded version is included to enhance pattern readability and make it easier for knitters to follow the cable sequences and stitch placements throughout the project.
