Valley Superwash, a wonderfully soft, versatile, medium worsted-weight wool, is ideal for crocheted accessories. The Valley Yarns Designer in Residence Superwash Scarf and Hat set is made in a unique rib-textured single crochet stitch worked on the bias. WEBS Designer in Residence Series #10: Superwash Scarf and Hat by Doris Chan – Crochet Pattern Summary

This downloadable PDF crochet pattern is part of the WEBS Designer in Residence Series and was designed by renowned crochet designer Doris Chan. The pattern covers two coordinating accessories — a ribbed-texture scarf and a ribbed-texture hat — both worked in a distinctive bias single crochet technique using Valley Yarns Valley Superwash yarn. The set is rated Easy and is suitable for crocheters who are comfortable reading their stitches and maintaining consistent gauge. The finished pieces have unisex appeal and make an excellent gift in any colorway.

About the Designs

The Superwash Scarf

The scarf is a 7-inch wide by 60-inch long rectangle, though both the width and length are fully adjustable depending on how much yarn you have available. What makes this scarf special is that it is not worked in the conventional direction — instead, it is worked on the bias, meaning the rows run diagonally across the fabric. Deliberate increases and decreases at the row ends create this angled, bias construction while also adding a subtle extra height at the edges. The result is a fabric with beautiful drape and a naturally stretchy, rib-like texture that lies flat without curling.

The scarf requires approximately 365 yards of yarn, or about 4 balls of Valley Yarns Valley Superwash.

The Superwash Hat

The hat is offered in three sizes: Kid, Woman, and Man, with head circumferences of 18, 20, and 22 inches respectively, and depths of 7, 8, and 8½ inches. Like the scarf, the depth and circumference are adjustable. The hat is designed with enough depth to pull down over the forehead and ears for full warmth, but the brim can also be turned back for a more relaxed cap style. The same bias single crochet stitch used in the scarf gives the hat its full-bodied, rib-textured fabric and its unisex character.

The hat requires approximately 140 yards for the sample size shown (20-inch circumference), or about 2 balls of Valley Yarns Valley Superwash.

Techniques Used

  • Bias crochet construction — rows are worked at a diagonal angle, with strategic increases and decreases shaping the fabric rather than working straight rows
  • Worked flat — the scarf is worked back and forth in flat rows
  • Worked in the round — the hat is worked seamlessly in the round
  • Seamless construction — the hat requires no seaming or finishing joins
  • Reading crochet stitches — the pattern requires the crocheter to identify and work into specific parts of the stitch structure rather than the standard top loops

Stitches Used

The entire pattern is worked almost exclusively in single crochet (sc), but with a critical variation: instead of inserting the hook under the two top loops of each stitch as is conventional, the hook is inserted into the bar just below the top loops. This subtle modification transforms a basic single crochet fabric into one with a pronounced rib-like texture that closely resembles knitted ribbing. Additional stitches referenced in the pattern include:

  • Chain (ch) — used for turning chains and foundation
  • Slip stitch (sl st) — used for joining in the round on the hat
  • Yarn over (YO) — standard technique referenced in stitch definitions

Because the stitch pattern relies on locating a specific part of the crochet stitch structure, a basic familiarity with reading crochet fabric is recommended, even though the overall skill level is rated Easy.
