Product Description
The We Three Kings of Orient Are Tea Cosy Knitting Pattern from TeaCosyFolk is unusual and festive and based on the Christmas carol and the three wise men.
The main cosy forms the camel's body, and the camel's legs, head and neck are then made and sewn on. Camels come in various shades from cream through to light brown, which gives lots of scope when deciding on the colour of your camel.
The Wise Man is knitted separately and sewn on the top of the main cosy. In his hands he is carrying a jar of gold, frankincense or myrrh.
The camel is laying down, the kind of position they get into so that people can climb on or off them. I like to think that they have reached the stable in Bethlehem and that the King is getting down from the camel with his gift ready to give.
It's a lovely tea cosy that is unusual and shines a spotlight on the three Kings that followed the star.
The Wise man tea cosy fits a medium sized teapot that covers a Teapot that holds 6 to 8 cups or 2 pints.
We Three Kings of Orient Are Tea Cosy
What is Being Made
This is a knitted tea cosy designed to fit a 2 pint teapot or a teapot that holds 6 to 8 cups. Created by TeaCosyFolk, this intermediate-level knitting project combines colorful DK weight yarn to produce a festive, decorative cover that insulates and protects teapots during serving.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
The tea cosy is constructed using fundamental knitting techniques suitable for intermediate crafters. The pattern begins with casting on 28 stitches using double thickness yarn, which creates a thicker, more durable fabric. The double thickness technique involves dividing the main yarn ball into two separate balls and knitting them together as a single strand to achieve increased fabric density and warmth retention—essential qualities for a functional tea cosy.
The base of the cosy is worked using ribbed stitch patterns, specifically a knit one, purl one (K1, P1) repeat that creates elasticity and helps the cosy grip the teapot securely. This ribbed foundation is repeated multiple times to establish the proper height and structure before the pattern progresses to more complex color work sections.
Stitches Used
- Knit stitch (K) — the fundamental stitch forming the primary fabric
- Purl stitch (P) — used in alternating sequence to create ribbed texture
- Ribbed stitch pattern (K1, P1 repeat) — provides elasticity and decorative texture
Materials Required
This project uses Stylecraft Special DK yarn in multiple colors totaling approximately 105 grams. The specific colors and quantities are: 73g Dandelion (cream), 9g Lobelia (blue), 8g Lime (green), 6g Apple (green), 6g Citron (yellow-green), 6g Lipstick (red), 3g Sunshine (yellow), 3g Stone (gray), 3g Gingerbread (brown), and 1g Black. DK (double knit) weight yarn is a medium-weight yarn that works efficiently with the specified needle sizes.
Two sizes of knitting needles are required: 5.5mm needles (UK size 5 or US size 9) for the main cosy construction, and 4.00mm needles (UK size 8 or US size 6) for more detailed sections. Additional materials include a stitch holder for managing active stitches during pattern transitions and polyester stuffing to add structure and shape to the finished cosy.
Pattern Features
The pattern from TeaCosyFolk incorporates multiple yarn colors to create a festive, themed design. The generous quantity of Dandelion yarn indicates it forms the primary background color, while the smaller quantities of contrasting colors are used for decorative details and color work sections that reference the "We Three Kings of Orient Are" theme. This multi-color approach requires careful yarn management and color changes throughout the knitting process.
