Product Description
These socks are worked from the cuff down with a heel flap and gusset decrease.
This pattern is written for 60 (72) sts on the round. Use any Fingering weight sock yarn and choose needle size, yarn and number of cast on stitches to get your sock size. Foot length is adjustable.
The wavy striping effect is created by working yo and double centre decrease sts with two yarns having good contrast. The pattern can also be used with one self-striping yarn.
Wavy Stripes Socks by Aud Bergo
What is Being Made
The Wavy Stripes Socks are a pair of knitted socks designed by Aud Bergo, available as a downloadable PDF pattern. These socks feature decorative wavy stripe patterning and are constructed using the cuff-down method with a traditional heel flap and gusset construction. The pattern offers two size options with a foot circumference of either 17.5 cm (7.0 inches) or 21 cm (8.25 inches), making them suitable for different foot sizes. The leg length, including the cuff and heel flap, measures 23.5 cm (9.25 inches) for all sizes, while the foot length is adjustable to accommodate individual preferences.
Knitting Techniques Used
This intermediate-level knitting project employs several essential sock construction techniques. The socks are worked in the round from the cuff downward, utilizing either two small circular needles, one long circular needle with the magic loop method, or five double-pointed needles. The pattern incorporates a heel flap construction paired with a gusset, which are traditional methods for creating a well-fitting heel and ankle area. The wavy stripe design is created through color work and stitch pattern manipulation, adding visual interest to the finished socks.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette Stitch (St st) – The primary stitch used throughout the socks, worked in the round
- Chevron Pattern – A decorative stitch pattern that creates the characteristic wavy stripe effect
Gauge Information
Achieving the correct gauge is essential for proper sock fit. The pattern specifies two different gauges depending on the stitch being worked. In stockinette stitch, the gauge is 31 stitches by 42 rounds over 4 inches (10 cm) when worked in the round and unblocked. The chevron pattern, which creates the wavy stripes, has a relaxed gauge of 34 stitches by 40 rounds over 4 inches (10 cm) when worked in the round and unblocked.
Materials and Yarn
The Wavy Stripes Socks are designed to be knitted with fingering-weight sock yarn. Any standard fingering-type sock yarn with a gauge of 28–32 stitches per 10 cm (7–8 stitches per inch) will work well for this project. A typical 4-ply sock yarn with approximately 200 meters (218 yards) per 50 grams (1.75 ounces) is ideal. For the largest size, the pattern requires approximately 50 grams (1.76 ounces) of main color (MC) yarn and approximately 30 grams (1.06 ounces) of contrasting color (CC) yarn, allowing for the two-color stripe design.
Needles and Notions
Knitters should use size 2.5 mm (US 1½) needles, with the option to choose between two small circular needles, one long circular needle for the magic loop technique, or a set of five double-pointed needles. Needle size may be adjusted as needed to achieve the correct gauge. Additional notions required include a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and a measuring tape for checking progress and adjusting foot length.
