Product Description
The bobble stitch provides lots of texture and is great to use in homeware items. It allows for the creations of patterns with give another dimension to the finished project. This is seen in the chevron pattern of this pillow.
This pillow is constructed in three panels. The front bobble stitch panel and two panels that make up the back of the pillow.
The pillow can be made from any DK yarn and in any colour combination to create a pillow that works for your home surroundings.
In the sample 4 colours are used. A (light blue) - 208m B (cream) - 134m C (grey) - 134m D (dark blue) - 700m
D uses more as the back of the cushion is made from this colour too. If you prefer to just use a mixture of colours on the back of the cushion then you could just use 2 balls of colour D.
The document provides a simple version of the pattern which uses the graph for the colour changes. There is also a version that included row by row instructions including all the colour changes.
Wavey Bobble Cushion by Amy Ziehn
Project Overview
The Wavey Bobble Cushion is an intermediate-level crochet design that showcases the versatility of the bobble stitch for creating textured homeware. This cushion combines dimensional bobble stitchwork with a striking chevron pattern, resulting in a decorative pillow that adds visual interest and tactile appeal to any living space. The finished cushion measures 40.5cm by 39cm and is designed to fit a standard 40cm square cushion pad.
Bobble Stitch Technique
The bobble stitch is the signature technique featured throughout this project. This stitch creates pronounced three-dimensional texture by working multiple yarn overs and pulls through a single stitch base, then closing them together at the top. The bobble stitch is particularly well-suited for homeware applications such as blankets and cushions because it provides substantial visual and tactile dimension. In this design, bobbles are strategically arranged to form a chevron pattern that adds another layer of visual complexity and movement to the finished piece.
Stitches and Construction
This pattern employs two primary stitch techniques across different sections:
- Bobble Stitches (Bbl sts): Used in Panel 1 with a gauge of 8 bobble stitches by 7.5 bobble stitches over 10cm (not counting the single crochet rows between bobble rows). These rows create the textured focal areas of the cushion.
- Single Crochet (sc): Used in Panels 2 and 3 with a gauge of 18 stitches by 24 rows over 10cm. Single crochet provides structure and stability between textured sections and creates a more refined fabric in designated areas.
Foundation single crochet (fsc) is used to establish the base chain, and yarn overs (yo) are incorporated as part of the bobble stitch construction technique.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
This pattern is designed for DK weight yarn and requires a 4.5mm crochet hook (or the appropriate hook size to achieve the specified gauge). The design calls for Cygnet Yarn, which provides 298 meters per 100 grams. The total yardage requirement is approximately 700 meters, distributed as follows:
- 3 balls of Saxe (color D) in approximately 235g/700m
- 1 ball each of Light Grey (B), Linen (C), and Cloud (A) in approximately 45g/134m for B and C, and 70g/208m for A
The multi-color yarn palette creates the chevron pattern effect. Additional materials include 4 buttons measuring 27mm, which are used as functional and decorative closures for the cushion cover, and a 40cm square cushion pad for filling.
Difficulty Level and Gauge
This project is rated as intermediate level, making it suitable for crocheters with some experience beyond basic stitches. Achieving proper gauge is essential for this design, particularly given the different gauge requirements for bobble stitch sections versus single crochet sections. Crocheters should work gauge swatches for both Panel 1 (bobble stitches) and Panels 2 and 3 (single crochet) before beginning the full project to ensure the finished cushion meets the intended dimensions.
Pattern Notes
The pattern uses US crochet terminology throughout. The chevron pattern emerges through the strategic placement of bobbles in combination with the color changes across the four yarn colors, creating a dynamic visual effect that showcases the dimensional qualities of the bobble stitch technique.
