Waves Cardigan by Sian Brown

What is Being Made

The Waves Cardigan is a knitted cardigan designed by Sian Brown, available as a downloadable PDF pattern. This garment is crafted using a combination of two premium yarns to create a sophisticated, textured piece suitable for intermediate knitters. The cardigan features a classic construction with a fitted silhouette, available in eight sizes ranging from 32 to 46 inches bust measurement, with lengths between 20½ and 23 inches.

Craft and Primary Technique

This project is executed entirely through knitting, making it ideal for crafters with intermediate-level skills. The pattern employs a two-yarn construction method, combining Debbie Bliss Cotton DK in Shade 20 with Debbie Bliss Pure Silk in Shade 06. The pure silk yarn is used doubled for the main pattern sections, while single strands are used for edges and finishing details, creating visual and textural interest throughout the garment.

Stitches and Stitch Techniques

The Waves Cardigan utilizes fundamental knitting stitches combined in a structured approach:

  • Stocking stitch forms the primary fabric base, providing a smooth, classic finish
  • Knit stitches (k) create the foundational structure
  • Purl stitches (p) add textural variation and are incorporated into the pattern design
  • Knit two together (k2tog) decreases are strategically placed to shape the garment and create the wave-like shaping detail

The pattern begins with a garter stitch edge (created by knitting 6 rows), which provides a neat, finished border before the main pattern commences. Decreases are worked in a rhythmic sequence to establish the characteristic wave shaping.

Materials and Equipment

The Waves Cardigan requires specific materials to achieve the intended drape and appearance:

  • Yarn A: Debbie Bliss Cotton DK in Shade 20, requiring 11 to 15 x 50 gm balls depending on size
  • Yarn B: Debbie Bliss Pure Silk in Shade 06, requiring 5 to 10 x 50 gm skeins depending on size
  • Needles: Pair of 3.25mm needles for ribbing and edges
  • Needles: Pair of 4mm needles for main fabric (tension is measured at 20 stitches and 30 rows over a 10 cm square in stocking stitch using 4mm needles with Yarn A)
  • Needles: Set of 3.25mm double-pointed needles for sleeve and neckline shaping
  • Stitch holders for securing stitches during construction

The combination of cotton and silk yarns creates a lightweight, breathable fabric with subtle sheen and elegant drape, making this cardigan suitable for transitional seasons and versatile styling.
