Warm Ota Pocket Shawl by Linda Lehman
Project Overview
The Warm Ota Pocket Shawl is an intermediate-level knitted wrap designed by Linda Lehman that combines functionality with decorative appeal. This wearable piece features integrated pockets that are added during the finishing stages, allowing the knitter to customize pocket placement for optimal comfort. The shawl is suitable for those with established cable knitting experience and offers an engaging project that rewards the maker with both an attractive finished garment and an enjoyable knitting experience.
Stitches and Techniques
This design incorporates two distinct stitch patterns to create visual interest and textural variety. The primary focal stitch is an ornate cable stitch that forms the decorative centerpiece of the shawl. Cable knitting requires the use of a cable needle to temporarily hold stitches while working subsequent stitches, creating the characteristic twisted rope-like appearance. The combination of two separate stitches throughout the pattern ensures that knitters remain engaged with varied techniques across the project. The cable stitch sections are worked to a gauge of approximately 5 stitches per inch when moderately blocked.
Construction and Materials
The Warm Ota Pocket Shawl is constructed using worsted weight yarn, also known as aran weight, requiring approximately 1800 yards for the main wrap portion. The primary knitting is executed on U.S. size #7 (4.5mm) needles, with U.S. size #6 (4.0mm) needles also needed for specific sections of the pattern. A cable needle is essential for executing the cable stitch sections that form the ornate focal design.
The edging is created using crochet techniques, requiring approximately 100 yards of the same or matching yarn and both size H and size I crochet hooks. Hook size can be adjusted based on individual crochet tension to achieve consistent results, as particularly tight or loose crochet work may require compensating with a different hook size.
Skill Requirements
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty and assumes the knitter possesses a solid working knowledge of cable knitting techniques. While the project is accessible to experienced knitters, those new to cable work should practice foundational cable stitches before beginning this shawl.
Finishing Details
The pocket construction is completed during the finishing phase of the project, offering flexibility in placement. This approach allows the knitter to try on the shawl and determine the most comfortable and practical pocket locations before securing them permanently.
