Walk in the Woods Cushion by Debbie Bliss
Project Overview
The Walk in the Woods Cushion is an intermediate-level knitting project designed by Debbie Bliss. This decorative cushion cover measures approximately 39cm x 39cm (15¼in x 15¼in) and features a charted colorwork design inspired by woodland themes. The finished cushion is a perfect addition to home décor and showcases the beauty of multi-color knitting techniques.
What Is Being Made
This project creates a knitted cushion cover with a nature-inspired design. The cushion is worked flat and incorporates a decorative charted pattern that uses multiple yarn colors to create visual interest. The finished piece is designed to fit a standard cushion form and includes button closures for practical functionality.
Knitting Techniques Used
The Walk in the Woods Cushion employs several key knitting techniques suitable for intermediate crafters. Charted colorwork is the primary technique, requiring knitters to follow a chart where odd rows are knit rows (read from right to left) and even rows are purl rows (read from left to right). This method allows for the creation of intricate multi-color patterns. The project also incorporates color stranding or intarsia methods to manage the various yarn colors throughout the design. Additionally, button band construction is included to create functional closures for the cushion cover.
Stitches Used
- Knit stitch (k) – the fundamental stitch used throughout the fabric
- Purl stitch (p) – used in alternating rows to create the base fabric structure
- Stocking stitch (st st) – the primary stitch pattern, created by alternating knit and purl rows
- Knit 2 together (k2tog) – a decrease stitch for shaping
- Slip slip knit (ssk) – an alternative decrease stitch for shaping
Materials and Yarn
This project uses Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK yarn, a premium blend ideal for creating soft, drape-able fabrics. The yarn weight is DK (Double Knitting), a versatile medium weight that works beautifully for detailed colorwork. The pattern requires one 50g/1¾oz ball each of six colors in Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK:
- Stone 08 (A)
- Bark 07 (B)
- Sky 16 (C)
- Ruby 24 (D)
- Pool 17 (E)
- Ecru 02 (F)
The pattern also calls for one 50g/1¾oz ball of Willow and Lark Ramble yarn in Lichen Green 115 (G). Knitting needles required are 4mm (US 6), paired needles suitable for working flat. Additional materials include 4 medium buttons for the cushion closures and a 40cm cushion form to complete the project.
Construction Notes
Yarn quantities provided are based on average requirements and are therefore approximate, allowing for slight variations in individual gauge and tension. The special abbreviation system used in this pattern includes color references (such as K2A, meaning knit 2 stitches in yarn A), making it easy to follow the charted design while working with multiple colors.
