VitaMin Doll Knitting Pattern

What is Being Made

The VitaMin doll is a handmade toy from the Talisman series, designed by Tatyana Korobkova. This charming knitted doll stands approximately 7.5 inches (19 cm) tall and features a classic doll construction with a body, head, and limbs all created through knitting techniques. The finished doll showcases white, blue, and red colored sections, with black beaded eyes adding character to the completed piece.

Techniques Used

The VitaMin doll is knitted in the round, which is the primary construction method for this project. Working in the round creates seamless tubular sections ideal for toy construction, eliminating the need for seaming body parts together. This technique requires comfort with circular or double-pointed needle work and is why the pattern is recommended for Advanced Beginner knitters. The in-the-round construction allows for continuous spiral knitting, making it efficient for creating three-dimensional toy forms.

The pattern uses both increase and decrease techniques to shape the doll's various sections. Increases are created using knit-front-and-back (Kfb) and purl-front-and-back (Pfb) methods, which add stitches for expanding sections. Decreases are accomplished through knit-two-together (K2tog), purl-two-together (P2tog), knit-three-together (K3tog), and slip-slip-knit (SSK) methods, allowing the knitter to shape and taper different parts of the doll as needed.

Stitches Used

  • Stockinette Stitch (St st) – The primary stitch used throughout the doll, created by knitting odd-numbered rounds and purling even-numbered rounds to produce a smooth, flat fabric surface ideal for toys
  • Knit Stitch (K) – Basic stitch used in odd-numbered rounds
  • Purl Stitch (P) – Basic stitch used in even-numbered rounds
  • Knit-Front-and-Back (Kfb) – Increase stitch that creates two stitches from one by knitting into both the front and back loops
  • Purl-Front-and-Back (Pfb) – Purl version of the increase stitch
  • Knit-Two-Together (K2tog) – Right-leaning decrease that combines two stitches into one
  • Purl-Two-Together (P2tog) – Purl version of the two-stitch decrease
  • Knit-Three-Together (K3tog) – Double decrease combining three stitches into one for more dramatic shaping
  • Slip-Slip-Knit (SSK) – Left-leaning decrease created by slipping two stitches individually as if to knit, then inserting the left needle through the front loops and knitting them together

Materials Required

This project uses Aran weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that works well for creating structured toys with good stitch definition. The designer used DMC Natura Just Cotton Medium yarn, which is 100% cotton, making it ideal for toys due to its durability and washability. Each skein contains 50 grams (1.7 ounces) with 75 meters (82 yards) of yardage.

Yarn is needed in three colors: white, blue, and red to create the doll's various sections and design elements. Additional materials include:

  • Four double-pointed needles in US size 2 (3 mm) – Essential for knitting in the round and creating seamless tubular sections
  • Toy stuffing – Used to fill the completed doll sections, creating a three-dimensional, plush form
  • Yarn needle – For weaving in ends and seaming sections together as needed
  • Stitch holder – For holding stitches temporarily during construction
  • Black beads (3 mm) – Used for the doll's eyes, adding facial features and personality

The pattern includes comprehensive abbreviations and instructions for all stitches, making it accessible for knitters who are comfortable with in-the-round construction and ready to tackle a project with multiple color changes and shaping techniques.
