Product Description
Knitted gloves in vintage style
I’ve a faible for vintage style and especially designing knitted gloves in vintage style. The pattern shown has a lace pattern that also includes cables, it’s pretty flexible so it fits almost everyone.
The pattern itself
I’ve worked a lot with the fit of the glove, and it’s especially, after my opinion at least, the way the thumb is made that has a lot to say about how nice the gloves are to wear. It fits like hand in glove so to speak. The pattern is very detailed described and there are added photos as well.
On a knitting scale from one to three, where one is easy and three is difficult, I will rate it around two.
Yarn and needles I use needles 2.5 mm- US 1.5 and I tried the pattern with sock yarn from arwetta, Filcolana, 80% wool and 20 % nylon. The gloves on the photos are done in arwetta from Filcolana Gauge is 35 sts and 47 rows = 10 cm But also in Drops Alpaca. Gauge is 33 sts and 44 rows = 10 cm
Vintage Gloves: Berthine
What is Being Made
The Vintage Gloves: Berthine pattern is a set of knitted gloves designed in a vintage style. These are fingerless gloves (also called finger gloves) that feature a ribbed cuff and stocking stitch body. The design is created by Birgitte Petersen and is available as a downloadable PDF pattern for independent knitters.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
This intermediate-level knitting project uses classic hand-knitting techniques to construct fitted gloves. The pattern employs stocking stitch as the primary fabric structure, creating a smooth, refined finish typical of vintage-style knitwear. The gloves feature a ribbed cuff that provides elasticity and a secure fit at the wrist. The construction is worked in the round using small-diameter knitting needles, a traditional method for creating seamless, form-fitting garments.
Stitches Used
- Stocking stitch (stockinette stitch) – the main fabric throughout the glove body, creating the characteristic smooth texture
- Ribbing – used for the cuff to provide stretch and recovery
Yarn and Materials
The Vintage Gloves: Berthine pattern is designed to work with 3-ply and 4-ply weight yarns. The recommended yarns are:
- Drops Alpaca – a premium yarn option
- Filcolana arwetta – composed of 80% superwash merino wool and 20% nylon, offering durability and easy care
The nylon content in these yarns is particularly beneficial for gloves, as it increases durability and wear resistance in a garment that receives frequent handling and friction. One to two skeins of yarn are required to complete a pair of gloves, depending on cuff length and finger length. A single 50-gram skein of arwetta with a 6 cm cuff may be sufficient for fingerless gloves with yarn remaining.
Needles and Gauge
Knitting needles: 2.5 mm (US 1.5) are used to achieve the correct fabric density for this pattern.
The gauge (tension) specifications are:
- 33 stitches and 44 rows = 10 cm (4 inches) in stocking stitch when using Drops Alpaca
- 35 stitches and 47 rows = 10 cm (4 inches) in stocking stitch when using Filcolana arwetta
Achieving the correct gauge is essential for proper fit. Knitters should adjust needle size up or down as needed if their personal gauge does not match the pattern specifications, as even small variations in tension can affect the final dimensions of the gloves.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle fitted garment construction. The project requires understanding of in-the-round knitting, gauge adjustment, and shaping techniques typical of hand-knitted gloves.
