Product Description
The Scappoose-Vernonia Highway between Twisted and Blue Moon is a long and winding road, in a beautiful part of Oregon. You travel past farms and homesteads and up and down rolling hills. It’s really quite refreshing and inspiring. The idea for this shawlette first came to me as I drove that road, heading home with one of the first skeins of BFL Fingering that Tina dyed. Once I stopped driving and got started knitting, this simple yet geometric pattern just kind of knitted itself. The asymmetric shawlette is very wearable, and it’s an easy pattern to adjust, size-wise.
Skill level - Advanced beginner (yarn overs, increasing, cables). Size/Finished measurements – One size fits most, and easily adjustable. See notes for details. 42” (middle side) x 44” (longest side) x 26” (shortest side).

What is Being Made
The Vernonia Shawlette is an asymmetric knitted shawlette designed by Shannon Squire. This wearable accessory features a simple yet geometric pattern that works beautifully as a versatile layering piece. The asymmetric construction makes it an easy pattern to adjust for different sizes, allowing knitters to customize the finished dimensions to their preferences.
Craft and Technique
This project is a knitting pattern suitable for beginner-level knitters. The design showcases how straightforward stitch techniques can create visually interesting geometric results. The pattern demonstrates that even simple construction methods can produce elegant, wearable pieces when thoughtfully designed.
Stitches and Construction
The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting techniques including make one, right leaning (m1r), which is executed by bringing the tip of the left needle under the strand between stitches from back to front, then knitting through the loop. This increase stitch is essential for the shawlette's asymmetric shaping and geometric patterning.
Materials
- Yarn: 350–400 yards of fingering-weight yarn (4-ply). The designer originally worked with BFL Fingering yarn, which provides excellent stitch definition for geometric patterns.
- Needles: Appropriate needles for fingering-weight yarn (specific needle size recommendations appear in the full pattern)
Design Inspiration
The Vernonia Shawlette was inspired by the Scappoose-Vernonia Highway in Oregon, a winding road through farms, homesteads, and rolling hills near the designer's home. The pattern emerged organically during the knitting process, combining the designer's appreciation for the landscape with the natural flow of the geometric stitch pattern.
