I was walking through the Vermont woods this fall, and was delighted by the contrast between the rough brown trunks and the vibrant leaves of the maple trees. This pattern could be used to highlight any beautiful handpainted or variegated yarn. In the sample in the photo I used Trekking, color Jamaika, (fingering weight - doubled), to represent the fall foliage colors.
Adult hat in three sizes, with lining over the ears for extra warmth. The finished measurement of the lining, without stretching is (20", 21.5", 23"). The medium size fits my 22.5" head nicely, with a snug but not tight fit. The large fits my hubby.
Vermont Autumn Hat by Cheryl Andrews
Overview
The Vermont Autumn Hat is an advanced-level knitting pattern designed to showcase the natural beauty of variegated or hand-painted yarns. Inspired by the striking contrast of brown maple tree trunks against vibrant autumn foliage in Vermont woods, this adult hat features a thoughtful construction with ear lining for enhanced warmth. The pattern is available in three adult sizes: small, medium, and large.
Design Features and Construction
This knitted hat incorporates a lined construction that extends over the ears, providing practical insulation during cooler months. The design celebrates the interplay of color through its use of a main color, contrast color, and coordinating lining yarn. The three-size range accommodates different head measurements while maintaining consistent proportions and stitch patterns throughout the design.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
As an advanced knitting project, the Vermont Autumn Hat employs techniques suitable for experienced knitters. The pattern utilizes both circular needles and double-pointed needles, which are standard tools for constructing fitted, seamless garments in the round. This construction method creates a polished, professional finish without seaming. The specific stitch patterns and techniques used in this design are intended to highlight the yarn's color variations and create visual interest through the interplay of the main color and contrast color elements.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
The Vermont Autumn Hat requires worsted weight yarn as the primary material. Specific yardage and weight requirements are as follows:
- Main Color (MC): Worsted weight yarn, approximately 4 ounces and 190 yards. The sample was knitted in Brown Sheep Lamb's Pride worsted weight in color Sable, which is composed of 85% wool and 15% mohair.
- Lining: Worsted weight acrylic yarn in a coordinating color, approximately 2 ounces. This is an excellent opportunity to use yarn from your existing stash.
- Contrast Color (CC): Sock weight or worsted weight yarn, approximately 1 ounce. If using sock weight, two strands are worked together. The sample featured Trekking Hand Art sock weight in color Jamaika, composed of 75% superwash wool and 25% nylon.
Needles and Gauge
The Vermont Autumn Hat is worked on size 6 needles, specifically a 16-inch circular needle and a set of 4 double-pointed needles. The recommended gauge is 20 stitches by 24 rows over 4 inches, which should be verified before beginning the project to ensure proper fit across all three sizes.
Yarn Characteristics
The pattern accommodates various yarn types within the worsted and sock weight categories. The sample demonstrates the versatility of the design by combining Brown Sheep Lamb's Pride, a wool-mohair blend known for warmth and subtle texture, with Trekking Hand Art, a superwash wool-nylon blend valued for durability and easy care. These fiber content combinations provide both aesthetic appeal and practical performance suitable for a hat designed for autumn and cooler weather wear.
