Product Description
A very easy pattern for a nice looking and cozy scarf.
I always wanted to make a nicely textured scarf with this type of variegated yarn. With the help of youtube I tried out many different stitches and textures before I decided that this was the one. I think it complements the colours and shows them of.
All types of yarn can be used for this project.
Varius Scarf by unneva
What is Being Made
The Varius is a knitted scarf designed by unneva as an independent designer project. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a beautiful, wearable accessory featuring a distinctive cross-stitch texture that works particularly well when knitted with variegated yarn. The scarf is constructed using a simple two-round repeat pattern that makes it accessible to intermediate knitters while delivering visually striking results.
Knitting Techniques Used
The Varius scarf employs cross-stitch techniques as its primary design element. The pattern alternates between two distinct rounds that are repeated throughout the length of the scarf. The cross-stitch construction creates texture and visual interest by manipulating stitches on the needle in a specific sequence. One key advantage of this pattern is its flexibility: knitters can easily adjust the scarf's width by casting on a different number of stitches, provided the cast-on number remains odd. This customization feature allows for personalization while maintaining the integrity of the cross-stitch pattern.
Stitches Used
The Varius pattern utilizes the following stitches:
- Knit stitch: Used in both rounds as a foundation and structural element
- Purl stitch: Incorporated in Round 1 to create the cross-stitch effect
- Cross stitches: The signature technique of this pattern, created by working two stitches out of order on the needle. In Round 1, the cross is made by purling the second stitch on the left needle while leaving it on the needle, then purling the first stitch, and removing both together. In Round 2, the cross is made by knitting the second stitch through the back loop while leaving it on the needle, then knitting the first stitch through the front loop, and removing both together.
Materials and Yarn Weight
The Varius scarf pattern accommodates multiple yarn weights, including aran, dk, and worsted weight yarns. The pattern suggests specific yarn options such as Araucania Aysen, Abuelita Worsted, and Malabrigo Silky Merino, though knitters are encouraged to use their yarn of choice. The pattern requires needles appropriate to the selected yarn weight to achieve proper gauge and fabric drape. The cross-stitch texture is particularly enhanced when working with variegated yarn, which adds color variation and emphasizes the dimensional quality of the stitches.
Pattern Overview
The Varius begins with a cast-on of 41 stitches, though this number can be adjusted according to desired width, as long as an odd number of stitches is maintained. The two-round repeat forms the foundation of the entire scarf design, making it straightforward to execute despite the intermediate difficulty level. The simplicity of the repeating pattern makes this an ideal project for knitters looking to expand their stitch repertoire while creating a finished piece with professional-looking texture and visual appeal.
