Valkyrie Cuffs by Sarah Jane Designs
What is Being Made
The Valkyrie Cuffs are a pair of mini crochet cuffs designed as a practical scrap-busting project. These wrist accessories are crafted to use minimal yarn, making them an excellent choice for utilizing leftover yarn from larger projects. Available in four sizes to fit wrist circumferences ranging from 5½ inches (Extra Small) to 7 inches (Large), these cuffs offer versatile sizing for different wearers. The design is noted as particularly striking in black and red colorways, though the pattern works beautifully with any yarn combination.
Crochet Techniques and Construction
The Valkyrie Cuffs employ intermediate-level crochet techniques that create visual interest through textured stitching. The primary construction method uses front post double crochet fabric, which creates a ribbed, dimensional effect ideal for a fitted wrist accessory. This technique involves working around the post of stitches from the previous row, producing a textured surface that provides both aesthetic appeal and structural integrity. The pattern also incorporates foundation double crochet, a technique that allows you to create your foundation chain and first row of stitches simultaneously, streamlining the project setup.
Stitches Used
The Valkyrie Cuffs pattern utilizes six essential crochet stitches:
- Chain – the foundational stitch used to create the base of the project
- Single Crochet – a basic short stitch used for shaping and finishing
- Double Crochet – a taller stitch that forms the main body of the cuffs
- Foundation Double Crochet – a combined foundation and stitch technique for efficient construction
- Front Post Double Crochet – the signature stitch creating the textured ribbed effect
- Slip Stitch – used for joining rounds and finishing edges
Yarn and Materials
The Valkyrie Cuffs pattern calls for two different yarn weights to create the finished design. You will need 75 to 100 yards of DK weight or light worsted weight yarn for the main body of the cuffs, and 180 to 200 yards of lace weight yarn for the decorative cuffs (labeled as components A and B). The pattern specifically recommends Colourmart Extra Fine Merino in both DK weight and lace weight for optimal results, though any DK, light worsted, or lace weight yarn that allows you to achieve the specified gauge is acceptable. This flexibility makes the pattern ideal for using up yarn scraps from your stash.
Gauge and Hook Size
Achieving the correct gauge is important for proper fit, particularly for the main cuff body. The pattern specifies a gauge of 14 stitches and 10 rows over 4 inches when working front post double crochet fabric using a 4.00mm crochet hook (UK size 8 / US size G/6) with DK weight yarn. Gauge for the lace weight yarn sections is noted as not critical to the pattern's success, allowing for more flexibility in that component. A yarn needle is required for sewing in ends after completion.
