Product Description

I just love February! It is such a fun month and one that has such meaning to me, since it is the month that my husband and I started dating, plus his birthday, and then of course Valentine's Day!

So I could not resist creating this heart pouch so that you can celebrate the love with your loved ones.

It is the perfect little pouch to give the gift of chocolate or any small item!

It is created by using double crochets, half double crochets, and single crochets to create a heart and then creating another heart around that. The button is attached at the point of heart to close the pouch!

Valentine's Day Heart Pouch by Megan Gebhard

Project Overview

This downloadable crochet pattern creates a charming Valentine's Day Heart Pouch, a beginner-friendly project perfect for gift-giving or personal use. The finished pouch measures 4 by 4 inches and features a two-color design combining deep purple and pink for a festive holiday aesthetic. The pouch is constructed by crocheting two matching heart shapes and seaming them together, with a functional button closure.

What is Being Made

The Valentine's Day Heart Pouch is a small decorative storage accessory shaped like a heart. Two identical heart pieces are crocheted separately and then joined together to form a pouch with a three-dimensional structure. A button serves as the closure mechanism, utilizing a small natural hole that forms at the point of the heart as the buttonhole. This compact pouch is ideal for storing small items such as jewelry, coins, or sentimental keepsakes.

Crochet Techniques Used

This pattern employs fundamental crochet techniques suitable for beginners. The construction begins with a magic ring, a popular method for starting projects in the round that creates a tight center without a visible hole. The pattern uses increasing stitches to shape the heart, strategically placing multiple stitches into single stitches to create the characteristic curves and fullness of the heart shape. The designer notes that the third row may feel tight around the circumference, but this tension naturally resolves in subsequent rows and when the two hearts are sewn together, demonstrating how shaping evolves through the construction process.

Stitches and Abbreviations

  • ch - chain stitch, the foundation stitch used to begin rounds
  • dc - double crochet, a taller stitch that creates fabric with good drape and structure
  • sc - single crochet, a short, dense stitch often used for finishing edges
  • hdc - half double crochet, a medium-height stitch that bridges single and double crochet
  • sl st - slip stitch, used to join rounds and create seamless transitions
  • sk - skip, an instruction to pass over a specified number of stitches
  • st - stitch, the individual unit of crochet fabric

Materials and Tools

The Valentine's Day Heart Pouch requires minimal materials, making it an economical project. Yarn in Aran weight (a medium-weight yarn) is used, specifically Red Heart brand in two colors: Deep Purple and Pink, with 30 yards of each color needed. A 4.5 mm crochet hook is the primary tool for constructing the hearts. Additional supplies include scissors for cutting yarn, a yarn needle for weaving in ends and seaming the two heart pieces together, needle and thread for attaching the button closure, and a button for the functional fastening element. The pattern achieves a gauge of 6 stitches and 1 row per 1 inch, which helps maintain the intended finished dimensions.

Pattern Notes and Construction Details

The pattern emphasizes the importance of maintaining the heart shape throughout construction. Key notes include creating two identical heart pieces that will be joined to form the three-dimensional pouch. The small hole naturally formed at the point of each heart serves as the buttonhole, eliminating the need for additional buttonhole construction. The designer acknowledges that tension may feel tight during the third round, but reassures crocheters that this is normal and will resolve as subsequent rounds are added and the two pieces are sewn together, resulting in a properly shaped and proportioned finished pouch.
