Product Description

I originally called this the “zig zag scarf” because of the geometric nature of the lace pattern. Once I saw a photo of some roofs from the corner of Valencia Street and 24th Street (Mission District) of San Francisco, I changed the name of the pattern to Valencia.

Pattern contains both written and charted instructions.

Valencia Scarf by Janelle Martin

What is Being Made

The Valencia Scarf is a versatile knitted accessory available in two distinct seasonal versions. The Summer Scarf is a lightweight lace scarf measuring 14.5 inches wide by 63 inches long when blocked, while the Fall Wrap is a more substantial piece at 21 inches wide by 37.5 inches long. Both designs feature a geometric lace pattern inspired by the architectural rooflines visible from Valencia Street and 24th Street in San Francisco's Mission District, originally conceptualized as a "zig zag scarf" due to its distinctive angular lace motifs.

Techniques and Stitches Used

The Valencia Scarf employs lace knitting techniques as its primary construction method. The geometric lace pattern creates the characteristic zig zag visual effect that defines the design. Lace knitting requires careful attention to yarn overs and decreases to form the openwork sections that give the scarf its airy, structured appearance. This technique is particularly effective in showcasing the drape and flow of the yarn while maintaining the architectural integrity of the pattern.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

Summer Version: The Summer Scarf requires 738 yards (675 meters) of fingering weight yarn in a plant fiber blend, preferably linen, with a structured composition that knits to a gauge of 6 to 7 stitches per inch. This lightweight yarn choice makes the summer version ideal for warm-weather wear.

Fall Version: The Fall Wrap uses a combination of two yarns held together. It requires 573 yards (524 meters) of aran weight plant fiber yarn (preferably linen blend) that knits to 6 to 7 stitches per inch, worked in tandem with 573 yards (524 meters) of merino and wool blend fingering weight yarn that knits to 7 to 8 stitches per inch. This two-yarn construction creates a richer texture and warmer fabric suitable for transitional seasons.

Needles and Tools

The Summer Scarf is worked on US #5 (3.75 mm) circular needles measuring 16 inches (40 cm), or a size adjusted to obtain the correct gauge. Circular needles provide flexibility for managing the width of the scarf while knitting.

Skill Level

The Valencia Scarf is rated as Advanced Beginner difficulty, making it accessible to knitters who have mastered basic knitting techniques and are ready to explore the intermediate challenge of lace pattern work. While lace knitting requires concentration and understanding of yarn overs and decreases, the geometric pattern provides clear visual guides for following the design.

Design Inspiration

Designer Janelle Martin drew inspiration from the urban landscape of San Francisco's Mission District, transforming architectural elements into a wearable textile design. The scarf's geometric zig zag pattern echoes the angular rooflines that inspired its name, creating a piece that bridges contemporary urban aesthetics with traditional knitting craft.
