Product Description
The perfect shawl to wrap around your shoulders.
Inspired by Shetland lace the shawl features the 'Traditional Scalloped Lace' motif. Designed as the perfect introduction to charted lace, this shawl is knitted sideways with the border worked as you knit the body. Worked using a percentage system, the shawl works across all yarn weights and a variety of yardages.
The lace is provided as written instructions and fully charted. The soothing garter stitch provides a welcome break from the lace sections. This is a great first lace project. The pattern comes with a separate document that gives you an overview of how to read lace charts for knitting.
Size
This is determined by yarn choice, gauge and yardage. This pattern is flexible and can be adapted to suit your yarn choice.
Materials
This shawl can be worked in any weight, with almost any yardage. Ideally you should have a minimum of 200m / 220 yds.

Stitches and Lace Work
The Vaila shawl features lace instructions as a key component of its design. The pattern includes detailed lace stitch guidance to help knitters execute the delicate, openwork sections that characterize this shawl. The pattern provides comprehensive instructions on how to read charts, which are essential for following the lace motifs accurately throughout the construction.
Pattern Structure
The Vaila pattern is organized into multiple sections for clarity:
- Section One
- Section Two
- Section Three
The pattern includes chart-based instructions with detailed guidance on chart reading, allowing knitters to visualize stitch placement and pattern repeats as they work through each section.

The pattern specifies yarn requirements and needle specifications (referred to as "Pointy Sticks" in the designer's terminology). A gauge swatch is included in the pattern documentation to ensure proper fit and drape of the finished shawl. The pattern also provides a complete abbreviations guide for all stitches used throughout the design.
Pattern Notes and Sizing
The Vaila pattern includes multiple sizes and comprehensive pattern notes to guide knitters through construction. These notes clarify techniques, stitch counts, and any special considerations for achieving the intended finished garment.
