Product Description
Exceptionally wearable, definitely comfortable, and even reversible—the Utopia Reversible Skirt. Made with Blue Sky Fiber’s fabulous Woolstok wool, this skirt knits up beautifully and quite quickly. This project does require a provisional cast on to create the waistband and picks up stitches to create the bottom hem. If you’re a beginner and these are new techniques, I’ve created a video tutorial on my website.

Utopia Reversible Skirt by Kraftling
What is Being Made
The Utopia Reversible Skirt is a wearable, comfortable knitted skirt designed to be worn on either side, offering versatility in a single garment. This downloadable knitting pattern from independent designer Kraftling creates a skirt that sits at the natural waist with a flattering silhouette suitable for multiple sizes ranging from 26" to 51" waist measurements and accommodating hip sizes from 36" to 61".
Techniques Used
This intermediate-level knitting project employs several important techniques that distinguish it from basic knitting patterns. The skirt construction utilizes a provisional cast on to establish the waistband, which allows for a seamless, finished edge at the top of the garment. After the main body is knitted, stitch pickup is performed along the bottom edge to create the hem. These techniques are essential for achieving the reversible quality and polished finish of the final garment. For knitters new to provisional cast-on and stitch pickup methods, designer Kraftling provides video tutorials on her website (kraftling.ca) to guide crafters through these techniques step by step.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
While specific stitch abbreviations are not detailed in the available pattern information, the Utopia Reversible Skirt incorporates color work with five different yarn colors, suggesting the use of stranded colorwork or similar techniques to create the reversible design. The pattern includes multiple sizes with corresponding stitch counts, indicating careful gauge management and shaping throughout the skirt construction.
Yarn and Materials
The Utopia Reversible Skirt is designed to be knitted with Woolstok by Blue Sky Fibers, a worsted-weight yarn available in multiple colorways. The main color (MC) used in the sample is Midnight Sea, requiring 2 to 4 skeins depending on size selection. Five contrast colors (CC1 through CC5) are each used in single 50-gram skeins: Spun Gold, Earth Ivy, Spring Ice, Highland Fleece, and Red Rock. Two needle sizes are specified for this project: 3.75 mm needles (achieving a gauge of 22 stitches over 4 inches) and 4.5 mm needles (achieving a gauge of 20 stitches over 4 inches). The choice of needle size will affect the final drape and fit of the completed skirt.
Sizing and Finished Measurements
- Eight size options available: XS through XXL
- Waist measurements: 26", 29", 33", 36", 40", 43", 47", and 51"
- Hip accommodations: 36", 39", 43", 46", 50", 53", 57", and 61"
- Skirt length ranges from 17.5" to 19.5" depending on size, providing proportional length adjustments across the size range
Pattern Difficulty and Craftsmanship
Rated as an intermediate difficulty level, the Utopia Reversible Skirt is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to expand their technical abilities. The reversible construction and use of provisional casting and stitch pickup make this pattern more challenging than basic projects, but the designer's instructional support makes these techniques accessible. The quick knit-up time combined with the practical wearability of the finished garment makes this an excellent intermediate project for expanding one's knitting repertoire.
