Product Description
This sample was made with Red Heart Eco-Ways Bamboo Wool, 2 balls Cayenne 3920, 1 ball Dill 3650 and size US 8 knitting needles. Gauge, 18 stitches and 24 rows in stocking knit makes a 4” swatch, preshrunk; 22 stitches and 36 rows in a 4” swatch, after shrinking (felting). Small adult sized hat, which can be felted more to make it smaller. There is a tie band on the inside which will help to fit the hat. I expect this hat to fit my daughter for many years to come, as I have pulled the inner band tie quite a bit to make it fit her now.

Upside Down Flower Hat Knit Pattern
What Is Being Made
The Upside Down Flower Hat is an intermediate-level knit pattern designed by Jessie Rayot that creates a small adult-sized hat featuring a distinctive upside-down flower motif. This downloadable PDF pattern includes construction details for a hat that can be customized through felting to achieve a smaller finished size. The design incorporates an adjustable tie band on the inside, making it adaptable for extended wear across different head sizes and ages.
Knitting Techniques Used
This pattern employs several fundamental and intermediate knitting techniques to construct the hat. The crown begins with a small cast-on and uses strategic increases to shape the hat top, creating the foundation for the flower design. The pattern incorporates both standard shaping methods and decorative elements that form the characteristic upside-down flower appearance. Felting is an optional finishing technique that can be applied to reduce the hat's size and create a more finished texture, with the pattern noting that preshrunk and post-felting gauges differ significantly, allowing crafters to customize the final dimensions.
Stitches and Skills Used
- Cast On (CO): Foundation stitch for beginning the hat at the crown
- Knit (K): Primary stitch used throughout the hat construction
- Purl (P): Incorporated for textural variation and pattern definition
- Make One (M1): Increase stitch used for shaping the hat crown and expanding stitches
- Slip Slip Knit (SSK): Decrease stitch for shaping and creating the flower design elements
- Knit 2 Together (K2tog): Decrease stitch for additional shaping throughout the pattern
- Place Marker (PM): Organizational tool for tracking pattern repeats and round divisions
- Slip Stitch (sl): Used for joining rounds and transitioning between pattern sections
Materials and Tools
The sample hat was crafted using Red Heart Eco-Ways Bamboo Wool, a worsted-weight yarn, requiring 2 balls of Cayenne (color 3920) for the main hat body and 1 ball of Dill (color 3650) for accent details. Construction requires US Size 8 knitting needles. The pattern specifies important gauge information for both preshrunk and felted versions: 18 stitches and 24 rows per 4-inch swatch in stockinette stitch before felting, and 22 stitches and 36 rows per 4-inch swatch after felting, allowing crafters to plan their finished hat dimensions accordingly.
