Product Description

Unintended is a lacy cardigan knit in a luxurious merino/silk/cashmere sport weight yarn: Madelinetosh Pashmina. It is knit from the top down, beginning with the neck ribbing and continuing on to neck short rows and contiguous shoulder seams. The straight, high neckline sets this cardigan apart from more typical crew neck garments. The two fronts and back section are knit separately and joined at the underarms. This lace cardigan also includes top-down set in sleeves, which are picked up from the armhole. Short rows are used to shape the neckline as well as the shoulder caps. This pattern includes instructions for three lengths of sleeves: short, elbow-length and long. The lace pattern at the end of the sleeves rounds out the cardigan for an overall luxurious look.

Gauge - 22 stitches x 32 rows = 4” (10 cm) in stockinette stitch on US Size 6 (4.0 mm) needles, or size needed to achieve gauge.

The sample is shown in Madelinetosh Pashmina. A suggested substitute is shown below.

Unintended Lacy Cardigan by The Public Knitter

What is Being Made

Unintended is a sophisticated lacy cardigan designed by Amanda Woeger and published under The Public Knitter brand. This top-down knit cardigan features a distinctive straight, high neckline that sets it apart from traditional crew neck designs. The garment combines elegant lace patterning with refined construction techniques, creating a luxurious finished piece suitable for intermediate knitters seeking a polished, wearable design.

Construction and Techniques

This cardigan employs a top-down knitting method, beginning with neck ribbing and progressing downward through the body. The construction method includes several advanced shaping techniques:

  • Neck short rows: Used to shape and contour the neckline for a custom fit
  • Contiguous shoulder seams: Create seamless transitions at the shoulders for a refined appearance
  • Separate front and back sections: The two front panels and back section are knit individually, then joined at the underarms for structured shaping
  • Top-down set-in sleeves: Sleeves are picked up from the armhole and knit downward, allowing for precise fit and adjustment
  • Shoulder cap shaping: Short rows are incorporated into the sleeve caps to create proper sleeve pitch and comfort
  • Lace pattern detailing: Decorative lace patterning appears at the sleeve ends, adding visual interest and a luxurious finishing touch

Sleeve Options and Sizing

The pattern accommodates different style preferences by including instructions for three distinct sleeve lengths: short sleeves, elbow-length sleeves, and full-length sleeves. This versatility allows knitters to customize the cardigan for various seasons and personal preferences. The pattern is available in multiple sizes, ranging from XS through L2 and X, ensuring a broad range of fit options.

Yarn and Materials

Unintended is designed to be knit in Madelinetosh Pashmina, a luxurious sport weight yarn blend combining merino wool, silk, and cashmere fibers. This premium yarn choice contributes to the cardigan's refined drape and soft hand. The sport weight classification provides an ideal balance between stitch definition for lace patterns and fabric fluidity. Knitters will require appropriate needles for sport weight yarn and the specific gauge called for in the pattern instructions.

Skill Level

Classified as an intermediate difficulty pattern, Unintended is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle more complex construction methods. The combination of top-down shaping, short row techniques, lace stitch work, and set-in sleeve construction makes this an engaging project for experienced knitters seeking to expand their technical repertoire.
