Product Description
This is a pattern for a Unicorn and a Llama Coffee Cozy. They fit the Tim Hortons travel mug perfectly. It is a great stash buster as it uses very little scrap yarn. We all have that small ball of worsted white yarn or Aran yarn that is just too small to make anything out of it. Until now that is :)
This would make the perfect last minute project, as it doesn’t take long to make. I would make a few to have on hand for that last minute gift you forgot about.

Unicorn and Llama Coffee Cozy by Lisa Kingsley
What Is Being Made
This downloadable crochet pattern creates decorative coffee cozies featuring unicorn and llama designs. Coffee cozies are cylindrical fabric sleeves that slip over hot beverage cups to provide insulation and a comfortable grip while protecting hands from heat. This pattern produces two distinct themed variations, allowing crafters to choose their preferred animal design.
Craft and Primary Technique
This project is designed as a crochet pattern, making it ideal for fiber artists working with a crochet hook. The pattern is written in standard US crochet terms, ensuring clarity for crocheters familiar with American crochet abbreviations and conventions. The design incorporates specialty stitch techniques, including the loop stitch, which creates textured, dimensional effects perfect for adding character and visual interest to the finished cozy.
Stitches and Techniques Used
The pattern employs fundamental crochet stitches suitable for beginners while incorporating decorative elements:
- Single crochet (sc) - the foundational stitch used throughout the structure
- Increases (2sc) - creating fullness by working 2 single crochet stitches into one stitch
- Decreases (sc2tog) - shaping the cozy by combining 2 single crochet stitches into one
- Slip stitch (sl st) - used for joining and finishing
- Chain stitch (ch1) - creating foundation chains and turning chains
- Loop stitch - a specialty stitch that produces looped texture, referenced through external video instruction
- Magic ring (MR) - an alternative method for beginning projects worked in the round
Construction Method
The cozy is constructed in the round using a continuous spiral rather than joining at the end of each round. This technique creates seamless, smooth transitions between rounds. Crafters are instructed to use a stitch marker placed at the beginning of each round and moved upward as rounds are completed, helping track progress and maintain consistent stitch placement.
Yarn and Materials
This pattern is designed for aran and worsted weight yarns, providing excellent stitch definition and a substantial finished fabric ideal for coffee cozies. The pattern references Red Heart Super Saver yarn, a durable, affordable acrylic option well-suited to everyday beverage accessories. Crocheters will need an appropriate crochet hook sized for their chosen yarn weight and stitch markers to track round progression.
Skill Level
Rated as a beginner difficulty pattern, this project is accessible to new crocheters while offering opportunities to practice fundamental techniques and learn the loop stitch through external video resources. The straightforward stitch combinations and clear abbreviations make it an excellent introduction to working in the round.
