Lea the Unicorn Amigurumi Crochet Pattern
What is Being Made
Lea the unicorn is a charming amigurumi toy designed by Diminu. This crochet pattern creates a finished unicorn approximately 15.5 cm (6.1 inches) tall when made with the recommended materials. Amigurumi is a Japanese technique for crocheting small, stuffed three-dimensional toys and decorative objects, making this project perfect for creating adorable handmade gifts or collectible toys.
Crochet Techniques Used
This beginner-friendly pattern employs fundamental amigurumi construction techniques. The design is worked in continuous rounds, a core amigurumi method that creates seamless, tubular fabric ideal for stuffed toys. The pattern uses standard crochet shaping techniques including increases and decreases to form the unicorn's body, head, ears, horn, and legs. Embroidery details are added after the main crochet work is complete to enhance facial features and add character to the finished toy.
Crochet Stitches and Abbreviations
Lea the unicorn pattern utilizes essential crochet stitches suitable for beginners:
- Chain stitch (ch) – the foundation stitch for starting the pattern
- Single crochet (sc) – the primary stitch used throughout the amigurumi construction
- Increase (inc) – worked as 2 single crochets in one stitch to expand fabric sections
- Decrease (dec) – combines 2 stitches into 1 to shape and reduce fabric
- Slip stitch (sl) – used for joining rounds and finishing
- Back Loop Only (BLO) – a technique inserting the hook only through the back loop of stitches for textured effects
Materials and Yarn Specifications
This pattern calls for 4-ply yarn, a medium-weight yarn ideal for creating defined stitches in small amigurumi projects. The designer used Katia Panama 100% cotton yarn (50g / 180 m), which provides excellent stitch definition and durability for a toy that may be handled frequently. The pattern requires yarn in eight colors: purple, lilac, yellow, green, dark pink, light blue, turquoise, and cream, allowing for creative color combinations to bring Lea to life.
Tools and Notions
Essential equipment for completing this project includes a 2 mm crochet hook, sized to work harmoniously with the 4-ply yarn for proper gauge and stitch definition. Additional materials include polyester fiberfill for stuffing the amigurumi, 4.5 mm plastic safety eyes for the unicorn's face, embroidery thread and a tapestry needle for adding facial details and finishing, and a stitch marker for tracking round progression in continuous crochet work.
Pattern Notes and Terminology
The pattern is written using US crochet terminology, important for crafters to note when following instructions. The design accommodates customization – while the finished unicorn measures approximately 15.5 cm (6.1 inches) with the specified yarn and hook, crafters can adjust the size by using different yarn weights and corresponding hook sizes, remembering to scale the safety eyes proportionally for proper fit and safety.
