Under Snow Mittens by Olga Beckmann
Project Overview
Under Snow is an intermediate-level knitted mitten pattern designed by independent designer Olga Beckmann. This downloadable PDF pattern offers knitters a complete guide to creating a pair of finished mittens using traditional knitting techniques and construction methods.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a pair of mittens suitable for cold weather wear. The mittens are designed as a complete hand covering project, making them an ideal accessory for winter knitting.
Craft and Techniques
The Under Snow mittens are created using knitting as the primary construction method. The pattern is designed for intermediate-level knitters, indicating that it incorporates techniques beyond basic stockinette stitch and requires some experience with mitten-specific shaping and construction.
Mitten knitting typically involves techniques such as:
- Circular knitting for seamless construction
- Increases and decreases for proper shaping
- Thumb gusset creation and management
- Top crown decreases for proper mitten closure
- Ribbing for cuff and edge finishing
Stitches and Materials
The pattern calls for 4-ply yarn weight, which provides a balanced fabric weight suitable for winter mittens. This yarn weight works well with standard knitting needles appropriate for the gauge specified in the pattern instructions.
Knitters will need:
- 4-ply weight yarn in the yardage specified by the pattern
- Knitting needles in the size recommended to achieve proper gauge
- Basic knitting notions such as stitch markers and yarn needles for finishing
