What is Being Made
The Twisted Shells Ear Warmer is a beginner-friendly crochet headband designed for adult women. This cozy accessory wraps around the head to cover the ears and provide warmth. The finished piece measures approximately 21 inches in length and features a distinctive twisted construction that creates visual interest while maintaining comfort and functionality.
Crochet Techniques Used
This pattern employs fundamental crochet techniques suitable for beginners. The main technique featured is the creation of shell stitches, which are formed by working multiple stitches into a single stitch to create a fan-like or shell-shaped texture. The pattern also incorporates a twisting technique where the completed piece is twisted once before the ends are joined together, adding dimension and a decorative element to the finished ear warmer. The joining method uses slip stitches to secure the ends, and single crochet is worked around the entire perimeter to finish the edges.
Crochet Stitches Used
- Chain (CH): Used to create the foundation and turning chains throughout the pattern
- Single Crochet (SC): Forms the base row and is used for finishing edges and joining sections
- Half Double Crochet (HDC): Part of the shell stitch combination that creates the textured pattern
- Double Crochet (DC): The tallest stitch in the shell combination, providing height and dimension to the design
- Slip Stitch (SL ST): Used to join the twisted ends together securely
Materials and Tools
This project requires 1 skein of worsted weight yarn. The pattern specifically recommends Lion Brand Vanna's Choice Yarn, with the example project worked in the Silver Heather colorway, though any worsted weight yarn of similar weight and yardage will work. A 5.0 mm crochet hook is used to work the stitches at the appropriate gauge. Additional supplies include a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends and scissors for cutting yarn. The pattern is worked to a gauge of 9 stitches across by 5 rows equaling a 2-inch square.
Pattern Structure and Construction
The Twisted Shells Ear Warmer begins with a foundation chain of 17 stitches. The first row establishes the base using single crochet stitches. The signature shell pattern is created in Row 2 and repeated until the piece reaches the desired length. Each shell is formed by working a single crochet, half double crochet, and double crochet into the same stitch, then skipping 2 stitches before repeating the pattern. This creates a repeating shell texture across the width of the piece. Once the ear warmer reaches approximately 21 inches in length or fits snugly around the wearer's head, the piece is twisted once and the ends are joined together using slip stitches. A final round of single crochet is worked around the entire perimeter to finish and neaten all edges.
