Product Description
This is a very easy cowl to knit and very easy to wear. It is knitted in a twisted rib, but only with knitting though the back loop, no purling tbl! It is stretchy, soft and warm.
The gage I gave is for standard aran yarn, as for this particular pattern, gage is really not very important, as long as you stick with aran or chunky (bulky) yarn weights.
I knitted this cowl some time ago, and since then Artesano British Chunky has been discontinued unfortunately, however you can still get it on ebay in the UK if you wish. Artesano Aran is still widely available.
Twisted Rib Cowl by IrinaPi
Project Overview
The Twisted Rib Cowl is an intermediate-level knitting pattern designed to create a versatile, textured neck accessory. This downloadable PDF pattern from independent designer IrinaPi provides complete instructions for crafting a cowl using a two-color twisted rib technique that combines visual interest with comfortable wearability.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a circular cowl—a tubular neckwear piece that can be worn as a single loop around the neck or doubled for extra warmth and coverage. The finished cowl features a sophisticated two-tone color combination created through alternating yarn colors in the rib pattern.
Techniques Used
The Twisted Rib Cowl employs several key knitting techniques to achieve its distinctive appearance and structure:
- Knit through the back loop (Ktbl) – This technique creates a twisted effect in the knit stitches, adding texture and visual depth to the fabric
- Color work – The pattern incorporates two contrasting yarn colors worked in alternating rows, requiring careful color changes at the beginning of each round
- In-the-round knitting – The cowl is constructed circularly using a circular needle, eliminating the need for seaming
- Blocking – The finished cowl is finished through wet blocking or steaming to set the stitches and enhance the final appearance
Stitches Used
The pattern utilizes a limited but effective stitch vocabulary focused on creating the twisted rib texture:
- Ktbl (Knit through the back loop) – Creates twisted knit stitches that add visual interest and structural integrity
- Purl (P) – Alternates with twisted knit stitches to form the rib pattern
- Cast on (CO) – Establishes the initial 150 stitches
- Bind off (BO) – Secures the final row loosely to maintain elasticity
Materials and Specifications
The Twisted Rib Cowl pattern calls for specific materials that contribute to the finished garment's quality and appearance:
- Yarn A (Grey) – Artesano British Wool Chunky in grey; 1 skein (100 grams/115 yards)
- Yarn B (Green) – Artesano Aran Inchard; 1 skein (100 grams/144 yards)
- Needles – 6mm circular needle for in-the-round construction
Pattern Construction Details
The cowl is constructed with 150 cast-on stitches worked in the round. The core pattern repeats a two-row sequence: Row 1 uses the grey yarn (Yarn A) with alternating Ktbl and purl stitches, while Row 2 repeats the same stitch pattern using the green yarn (Yarn B). This two-row repeat is worked 16 times or more, depending on desired cowl width, followed by one final Row 1 and a loose bind-off with the grey yarn.
Pattern notes indicate that when changing colors at the beginning of each round, both yarn strands should be held together for the first stitch to ensure a secure color transition.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, this pattern assumes knitters have foundational skills including comfortable circular needle work, familiarity with basic stitches, and experience managing color changes. The twisted rib technique and two-color work provide appropriate challenge for advancing knitters without overwhelming complexity.
