Product Description
Inspired by the trio of beautifully dyed yarn Bijou Spun by Bijou Basin Ranch, Himalayan Summit. One color is solid Tumeric, and other two echo the solid color but add others in light and dark versions. They are called Mulled Cider and Pumpkin Spice. This featured color combination evokes a dream of many to see the Tibet region in the Fall.
The triangular shawl offers a play with colors and four different stitch patterns for a rich texture: basic brioche, lace, elongated stitches, and garter stitch.
Garter stitch Lace is charted and is included in the written instructions. Schematics shows approximate placement of stitch patterns.
Lots of pictures and very clear written instructions are making it easy to follow.
Provisional cast on video is provided in the pattern and is on Faina’s website.
Turmeric Shawl by Faina Goberstein
What is Being Made
The Turmeric Shawl is a large triangular knitted shawl designed by Faina Goberstein. This downloadable knitting pattern produces a finished garment measuring approximately 84 inches (213 cm) in wingspan and 37 inches (94 cm) in height after blocking. The shawl is substantial enough to wrap around yourself as a luxury accessory, making it suitable for both everyday wear and special occasions.
Design Inspiration and Color Composition
Named after the golden spice from the turmeric plant of the ginger family commonly used in Himalayan curry cuisine, this shawl celebrates a sophisticated color palette. The design features a delicious mixture of colors and textures that evolve as you knit. One color serves as a solid base, while two additional colors echo the solid color but introduce lighter and darker versions, creating visual depth and interest throughout the piece.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
The Turmeric Shawl incorporates multiple knitting techniques unified in harmony to showcase beautifully dyed yarn. The stitch pattern combines:
- Garter stitch for textured, reversible fabric
- Brioche stitch for an elastic, dimensional texture
- Lace stitch for openwork and delicate details
- Open work stitch for airy, decorative sections
This combination of techniques creates visual interest and allows knitters to experience the satisfaction of working different stitches while watching the color scheme evolve throughout the project.
Yarn and Materials
The Turmeric Shawl is designed for fingering weight yarn, classified as 3-ply. The pattern is shown worked in Bijou Spun yarn by Bijou Basin Ranch, a luxury blend of 50% yak down and 50% super fine merino. The pattern requires one skein each of three colorways: Turmeric (A), Pumpkin Spice (B), and Mulled Cider (C), with each skein providing 325 yards (297 meters) per 100 grams. This high-quality yarn composition contributes to the softness and drape of the finished shawl.
Skill Level
This pattern is rated at an intermediate difficulty level, making it suitable for knitters with some experience who are ready to tackle multiple stitch techniques and manage color changes within a single project.
