Tunisian Sampler Blanket CAL: 16-Square Crochet Throw

Project Overview

The Tunisian Sampler Blanket, designed by Arunima Goel of KnitterKnotter, is a 16-square crochet-along (CAL) project that creates a beautiful throw blanket. This beginner-friendly design invites crafters to explore the versatility of Tunisian crochet techniques by working through multiple sampler squares that combine to form a cohesive finished blanket.

Craft and Technique

This project is worked entirely in crochet, specifically utilizing Tunisian crochet methods. Tunisian crochet is a hybrid technique that bridges traditional crochet and knitting, creating a dense, fabric-like texture with a distinctive appearance. The sampler format allows makers to practice and master various Tunisian stitches and stitch combinations across the 16 individual squares before assembling them into the final blanket.

The crochet-along structure breaks the larger project into manageable segments, making it ideal for crafters building skills or those new to Tunisian techniques. Each square showcases different stitch variations, providing educational value while producing a visually interesting finished piece with varied textures and patterns.

Stitches and Construction

While the pattern features multiple Tunisian stitch variations across its 16 squares, the sampler approach ensures that crafters encounter diverse stitching techniques throughout the project. Tunisian crochet stitches create characteristic ridged textures that differ from standard crochet, offering a unique aesthetic and structure to the finished blanket.

Materials

This project is designed to work with Aran weight yarn, which provides excellent stitch definition and creates a substantial, warm blanket suitable for everyday use. The pattern was developed using Lion Brand Heartland yarn in five coordinating colorways: Olympic, Yosemite, Yellowstone, Joshua Green, and Sequoia. These nature-inspired colors create a cohesive palette across the sampler squares.

Crafters will need a crochet hook appropriate for Aran weight yarn, as well as standard finishing supplies for assembling and blocking the completed squares into the final blanket form.

Finished Project

The completed Tunisian Sampler Blanket functions as a versatile throw blanket, combining 16 distinct squares into a unified design. The sampler format ensures visual interest through varied stitch textures while the coordinated yarn colors maintain overall cohesion. This project is suitable for crafters of beginner skill level who are ready to explore Tunisian crochet techniques.
