Tulpe Top by Lisa Hannes
What is Being Made
The Tulpe Top is a lightweight summer sweater designed by Lisa Hannes featuring an oversized, loose-fitting silhouette. This lovely knitted garment showcases a beautiful tulip motif throughout, with the name "Tulpe" referencing the German word for tulip. The design combines both textured and smooth elements to create a modern and feminine everyday wear piece. The sweater features a boat neck, drop shoulders, and a split-hem construction that adds to its relaxed, swingy aesthetic.
Construction Method
The Tulpe Top is constructed using a top-down approach, worked seamlessly in one piece for efficiency and minimal finishing. The pattern begins at the shoulders with the upper front and back pieces, which are knitted flat rather than in the round. Ribbing is worked along the shoulders to provide structure and definition, while the body transitions into the textured stitch pattern. This construction method allows for easy customization of length and ensures a cohesive, well-proportioned fit.
Stitches and Techniques Used
- Stockinette Stitch: Used as the foundational smooth stitch to complement the textured elements
- Ribbing: Applied along the shoulders to create structure and a finished appearance
- Tulip Motif Stitch: A textured stitch pattern that creates the distinctive tulip design throughout the garment, combining decorative texture with wearability
- Flat Knitting: The front and back pieces are worked flat on straight needles rather than in the round, allowing for precise stitch pattern placement
Materials
This pattern calls for sport weight yarn, which is ideal for creating a lightweight, breathable summer garment. The sport weight provides enough structure for the textured tulip pattern while remaining comfortable for warm weather wear. Standard knitting needles appropriate for sport weight yarn are required for the construction of this top-down design.
Skill Level
The Tulpe Top is rated as an intermediate difficulty pattern, making it suitable for knitters with some experience. The combination of flat knitting, ribbing techniques, and the textured tulip stitch pattern requires familiarity with basic knitting skills and the ability to follow stitch pattern instructions, but remains accessible to those beyond the beginner stage.
