What is Being Made

The Tulia Blanket is a knitted throw blanket designed by OGE Knitwear Designs. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a finished blanket measuring 86 cm wide by 117 cm long (34 inches by 46 inches). The blanket's name, Tulia, means "gracious gift," making it an ideal project for creating a thoughtful handmade present. Despite its intricate appearance, the Tulia Blanket features a beginner-friendly lace pattern that is easily memorized once you understand the core stitches and repeats.

Knitting Techniques Used

The Tulia Blanket employs lace knitting techniques as its primary construction method. Lace knitting involves creating decorative openwork patterns through strategic yarn overs and decreases that form holes and delicate motifs throughout the fabric. Although the finished blanket appears visually complex with its lace pattern details, the actual knitting process is manageable for intermediate knitters who are comfortable with basic lace construction. The pattern is designed to be easily memorized, allowing knitters to work without constantly referring to written instructions once the repeat sequence is established.

Stitches and Pattern Details

The Tulia Blanket utilizes fundamental knitting stitches combined in a lace pattern structure. Key techniques include:

  • Yarn overs – creating the decorative openwork holes characteristic of lace knitting
  • Decreases – paired with yarn overs to maintain stitch count and shape the lace motifs
  • Stockinette stitch – likely used in sections between lace pattern repeats for texture contrast

The pattern is constructed to be easily memorized, which is particularly helpful when working on a large project like a blanket where you may work many rows of the same repeat.

Yarn and Materials

The Tulia Blanket is knitted using Fiddlesticks – Peppin 8 yarn, an 8-ply (DK weight) yarn composed of 100% Australian Fine Merino Wool with superwash treatment. This yarn choice creates a beautifully soft finished blanket with natural warmth and breathability. The superwash treatment makes the blanket easier to care for and more practical for regular use and washing.

Yarn Requirements: The blanket requires almost a full amount of 8 balls of 50-gram yarn. Each 50-gram ball contains 110 meters or 120 yards of yarn, providing sufficient yardage for the complete project after blocking.

The pattern notes that cotton yarn would also work well as an alternative fiber choice, offering knitters flexibility in material selection based on their preferences for weight, drape, and care requirements.

Needles Required

The Tulia Blanket is worked on 4 mm (US size 6, UK size 8) circular needles measuring 61 cm (24 inches) in length, or extra-long straight needles if preferred. Circular needles are recommended for this project to accommodate the large number of stitches required for the blanket's width and to distribute the weight of the growing fabric comfortably during knitting.

Finishing

The blanket measurements provided are taken after blocking, indicating that the finished blanket should be wet-blocked to achieve the final dimensions and to fully open up and display the lace pattern details. Blocking is an essential finishing step for lace knitting projects, as it sets the stitches and allows the delicate openwork to be properly shaped and sized.
