Product Description
Troppo Mayhem is, despite the name, neither too much (troppo) nor too little. Rather, it is just right. Plenty of squishy comfort is knitted in soothing stretches of simple garter stripes; a brief short-row interlude then prepares the way for a decoratively arching cable motif for the finale.
ConstructionKnitting begins with a provisional cast on that is bound off with a stretchy bind off, but you can use any (stretchy) cast on you like. Simple garter stripes on the bias are followed by a brief shortrow filler section. A cable motif grows out of plain garter stitch and finishes the shawl. A spine created by a central double decrease runs from the starting point and sprouts the final cable motif.
Each of the three sections is written out row by row. For the cable motif there is, in addition, a chart.

Troppo Mayhem Stole by Åsa Tricosa
What is Being Made
Troppo Mayhem is a knitted stole designed by Åsa Tricosa. Despite its playful name—which references the Italian word "troppo" meaning "too much"—this stole achieves a balanced design that is neither excessive nor minimal, but rather perfectly proportioned. The finished piece offers generous, comfortable dimensions suitable for wrapping and layering.
Design Structure and Construction
The stole is constructed in three distinct sections that build progressively throughout the knitting experience. The design begins with soothing garter stitch stripes that form the foundation of the piece, providing a meditative knitting experience through simple, repetitive stockinette and garter combinations. This section emphasizes comfort and ease of knitting.
The middle section introduces a short-row interlude, a shaping technique that adds dimension and transitions the stole toward its decorative finale. Short rows create subtle three-dimensional shaping without increasing or decreasing stitch counts dramatically.
The final section features a decoratively arching cable motif that serves as the showpiece conclusion. This cable work provides visual interest and demonstrates intermediate-level stitch complexity, creating an elegant finishing statement for the garment.
Stitches and Techniques Used
Troppo Mayhem employs a range of knitting techniques appropriate for intermediate-level crafters:
- Garter stitch – the foundational texture throughout the striped sections
- Cable stitches – specifically left-leaning crosses including C2L1(kb), C2L1(p), and C2L2 variations that create the decorative arching motif
- Short-row shaping – using slip stitches and turn techniques (5-to-1 WS sequence: sl5wyf, turn, sl3tog knitwise, k2tog, psso) to create dimensional shaping
- Yarn overs – for lace or textural elements (1-to-3: k1, yo, k1 into one stitch)
- Make-one increases – both M1L and M1R variations for seamless stitch creation
- Cable needle work – holding stitches on cable needles for cross formations
- Knit through back loop – creating twisted stitches for textural variation
Yarn and Materials
Troppo Mayhem is designed to be knitted with Masham Mayhem yarn from Ginger Twist, a DK weight yarn. This yarn is described as lofty, woolly, and exceptionally soft—qualities that make it particularly suitable for a comfortable, wearable stole. The yarn's characteristics are noted as "slightly addictive," suggesting excellent stitch definition and a pleasant tactile experience during knitting. DK weight yarn provides a balanced fabric weight that is neither too heavy nor too delicate, making it ideal for a stole that drapes beautifully while maintaining structure through the cable work.
Skill Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle cable work and short-row shaping. The progression from simple garter stripes to more complex techniques provides a satisfying learning curve within a single project.

Troppo Mayhem is available as a downloadable PDF pattern, allowing immediate access to the complete instructions and stitch abbreviations needed to complete the project.
