Product Description
This piece was designed for my favorite knitting student Trisha. We were working on new skills, so this is a great beginner pattern for knitters. Trisha first wanted a table runner for her dresser so the pattern was designed with this in mind. By the time we finished working on the project it was summer in Tucson and the table runner became a light weight summer shawl. So we have one project with 2 different uses. One size, with directions for making the pattern longer.
2 skeins Anne at 371 yards per skein. U.S. circular knitting needle 10 x 32 (6.0 x 80cm) 2 stitch markers, 1 darning needle, paper and pencil.
Trisha's Shawl by Sheri Karobonik
Project Overview
Trisha's Shawl is a versatile beginner knitting pattern designed by Sheri Karobonik that serves dual purposes as both a lightweight summer shawl and a decorative table runner. This adaptable design was created specifically for developing knitters who are building new skills and seeking accessible projects. The shawl's practical dimensions and straightforward construction make it an ideal choice for those new to knitting who want to complete a wearable or home décor piece with confidence.
Design Features and Versatility
The pattern showcases thoughtful design flexibility, allowing crafters to customize the finished size by adding additional repeats to the center section. This means the same pattern can be worked to different lengths depending on whether you intend to use it as a table runner for a dresser or as a lightweight wrap for warm weather. The shawl design was inspired by the warm Tucson summer climate, making it particularly suitable for creating breathable, comfortable layers during hot months.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
As a beginner-level knitting pattern, Trisha's Shawl incorporates fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for those developing their skills. The pattern features a center panel that serves as the focal point of the design. The designer encourages a relaxed approach to pattern perfection, noting that minor variations in the center panel can add interesting and unique design characteristics to the finished piece. This philosophy supports beginner knitters in building confidence and understanding that handmade items naturally develop individual character through the knitting process.
Yarn and Materials
The pattern calls for 4-ply weight yarn, which provides an ideal balance of drape and structure for both shawl and table runner applications. The designer specifically recommends Anne yarn from Circulo, which offers a wide variety of color options including both solid and variegated choices. This yarn selection ensures excellent stitch definition for beginners while maintaining the lightweight quality necessary for a summer shawl. Crafters are encouraged to substitute their favorite 4-ply weight yarns and colors to personalize the project according to their preferences.
Finished Size and Fit
The pattern sample was modeled by Trisha, who wears a size small, providing a reference for how the finished shawl drapes and fits. The adaptable center section allows knitters to adjust the overall length and dimensions of the finished piece, making it suitable for various preferences and intended uses.
