Product Description
Meet Tripp. Tripp likes to play with cables, jump over eyelets, and delight us.
Worked in the round, Tripp contains both cuff-down and toe-up written directions and a chart for the pattern stitch. The pattern has instructions for an afterthought heel, but you may substitute whatever heel you enjoy using.
The pattern is written for the magic loop method for knitting socks; however, the design could be worked on double-pointed needles or mini-circulars instead should you prefer.
Tripp Socks by rhyFlower Knits
What Is Being Made
Tripp is a downloadable knitting pattern for a pair of intermediate-level socks designed by rhyFlower Knits. This toe-up sock pattern is available in four sizes, with finished circumferences measuring 7.5, 8, 8.5, and 9 inches (19, 20.5, 21.5, and 23 centimeters) around the ball of the foot. The pattern accommodates various foot lengths and leg heights, making it adaptable to individual measurements and preferences.
Knitting Techniques Used
The Tripp sock pattern employs several key knitting techniques suited to intermediate-level crafters. The socks are constructed using the toe-up method, which begins at the toe and progresses upward toward the cuff. This approach allows knitters to try on the sock as they work and adjust the leg length to their preference before binding off. The pattern incorporates cable stitches as a decorative element, adding textural interest and visual appeal to the finished garment.
Circular needles are used throughout the construction, enabling seamless knitting in the round. This technique eliminates the need for seaming and creates a smooth, comfortable fit around the foot and leg. The pattern requires basic shaping techniques including increases and decreases to form the foot and accommodate the transition from toe to leg.
Stitches and Stitch Abbreviations
The Tripp pattern features the following specialized stitches:
- 3/3 LC (Left Cable): Slip 3 stitches to a cable needle and hold in front; knit 3 stitches from the working needle; then knit the 3 stitches from the cable needle. This creates a cable that twists to the left.
- 3/3 RC (Right Cable): Slip 3 stitches to a cable needle and hold in back; knit 3 stitches from the working needle; then knit the 3 stitches from the cable needle. This creates a cable that twists to the right.
- Stockinette Stitch: The primary fabric stitch used for the main body of the socks, created by alternating knit and purl rows in flat knitting, or knit rounds in circular knitting.
- Inc (Increase) and Dec (Decrease): Shaping techniques used to form the contours of the foot and leg.
Materials: Yarn and Needles
The Tripp pattern calls for fingering weight yarn, also known as 4-ply yarn, with a total yardage requirement of 300 to 500 yards (274 to 458 meters), depending on the chosen size and desired leg length. The suggested yarn is Turtlepurl Yarns Striped Turtle Toes, a blend of 75% superwash merino and 25% nylon. This fiber composition provides durability, elasticity, and easy care—the nylon content increases resilience in high-wear areas, while the merino offers softness and temperature regulation. The sample sock shown in the pattern was knitted using the Trenchcoat colorway, which provides a neutral, versatile aesthetic.
The pattern recommends US1 (2.25 mm) circular needles measuring 32 to 40 inches (82 to 102 centimeters) in length, or the size necessary to achieve the specified gauge. Additional notions required include a tapestry needle for weaving in ends, a cable needle for working cable stitches, scrap yarn for stitch holders, and stitch markers to track pattern repeats and shaping points.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 9 stitches by 11 rounds in stockinette stitch, measuring 1 inch by 2.5 centimeters after blocking. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for obtaining the intended finished measurements. The sample shown was knitted on 64 stitches using the toe-up construction method, providing a reference point for crafters working through the pattern.
