Product Description
This cowl features three braided cables and an i-cord edging. A provisional cast on is used so you can work a three-needle bind off at the end. The i-cord edging helps prevent the work from curling while leaving a clean, St st edge. It can be made as a scarf by adding length and using a standard cast on and bind off.
The gauge for the pattern is wider than that which is suggested on the yarn label.
Trio of Cables Cowl (or Scarf) by Cathbell Knits
Project Overview
The Trio of Cables Cowl (or Scarf) is a versatile knitted accessory designed by Cathbell Knits that features three braided cables as its signature design element. This intermediate-level project can be constructed as either a cozy cowl or an extended scarf, making it adaptable to different styling preferences and yarn availability. The design showcases multiple advanced knitting techniques while maintaining accessibility for knitters with some experience.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a finished cowl measuring 6.5 inches tall with a 23-inch circumference, perfect for wearing as a close-fitting neck accessory. Alternatively, the same construction method can be extended to create a scarf measuring 6.5 inches wide by 56 inches long, offering greater length and drape. Both versions feature the same cable-focused design aesthetic, with the primary difference being the total yardage used and the cast-on method selected.
Knitting Techniques and Construction Methods
This intermediate project incorporates several advanced knitting techniques that build valuable skills:
- Provisional Cast On: Used for the cowl version, this technique allows stitches to be picked up later for a seamless join, enabling the three-needle bind off at the end of the project.
- Cable Knitting: The centerpiece of the design features three braided cables that require the use of a cable needle or double-pointed needle to create the twisted, interlocking rope-like texture.
- I-Cord Edging: Applied to the cowl to create a clean, finished edge that prevents curling while maintaining the integrity of the stockinette stitch border.
- Three-Needle Bind Off: Used exclusively for the cowl construction, this technique joins two sets of live stitches together, creating a seamless seam that closes the cowl into its circular form.
- Standard Cast On and Bind Off: For the scarf variation, traditional cast-on and bind-off methods are used instead of the provisional technique.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The pattern employs a combination of fundamental and decorative stitches to achieve its textured appearance:
- Stockinette Stitch (St st): Forms the smooth background of the design and appears in the edging, creating visual contrast against the raised cables.
- Cable Stitches: The three braided cables are created using cable cross stitches, with abbreviations including C6R (cable 6 right), which involves crossing stitches over one another using a cable needle to create the characteristic twisted effect.
- I-Cord: A tubular stitch structure worked over a small number of stitches to create the finished edge detail that frames the cowl.
Yarn and Materials
The Trio of Cables Cowl is designed to work with Juniper Moon Farm "Fourteen" yarn, a chunky-weight option that creates a substantial, warm accessory. The cowl version requires 2 skeins of 50 grams each, while the scarf variation requires 4 skeins to achieve its extended length. This yarn choice contributes to the project's relatively quick completion time despite its technical complexity.
The pattern calls for US size 10.5 (6.5 mm) needles as the primary working needles, available in either straight or circular configurations depending on knitter preference. A cable needle or double-pointed needle is essential for manipulating the cable stitches. Additional materials include a yarn sewing needle for weaving in ends. For the cowl construction specifically, an H8 or larger crochet hook is needed to work the provisional cast on, and US size 4-6 needles are required for the three-needle bind off. The pattern also specifies 2 yards of scrap yarn for the cowl's provisional cast-on technique.
Gauge and Sizing
Proper gauge is essential for this project's success. The pattern specifies 6 stitches equals 1 inch over the cable pattern when worked on the larger needles, and 3.5 stitches equals 1 inch over stockinette stitch. Achieving the correct gauge ensures that the finished cowl or scarf reaches its intended dimensions and drapes appropriately.
