Product Description

Tricsi fastens with one button & is knitted in one piece from a provisional cast-on at the centre back collar down to the hem, collar, front bands & all.

(See Tric for an adult version)

Step-by-step instructions & a photo tutorial guide you through the unusual beginning, zigging, zagging & zipping back & forth before you're sooner at the hem than you'd thought.

There are, unnecessarily one might think for a child cardigan, short-rowed shoulders. There is a reason – apart from the fact that a child, too, might deserve a more tailored garment at times. The idea was that Tricsi would closely echo my adult cardigans & sweaters, a sort of trial run for knitters who may want to try out the Ziggurat Method before committing to the adult size.

Shown in Madelinetosh Merino DK. A suggested substitute is below.

Tricsi Top-Down Baby and Child Cardigan by Åsa Tricosa

What Is Being Made

Tricsi is a seamless baby and child cardigan designed by Åsa Tricosa, featuring strong, simple lines and a minimalist aesthetic. This garment is knitted in one piece from the centre back collar down to the hem, incorporating the collar, front bands, and all construction details without any seams. The cardigan fastens with a single button, making it both practical and elegant for young wearers. Available in five baby sizes (3, 6, 12, 18, and 24 months) and five child sizes (3, 4, 6, 8, and 10 years), with finished chest measurements ranging from 41 cm to 73 cm (16 inches to 29 inches).

Construction and Techniques

This cardigan employs a top-down construction method, which is a popular technique in modern knitting that allows knitters to try on the garment as they work and adjust the fit easily. The seamless construction is achieved through knitting the entire piece in one continuous section, eliminating the need for seaming and creating a smooth, professional finish. The design features set-in, top-down sleeves that are integrated into the body during the knitting process rather than picked up and knitted separately after assembly. This approach contributes to the garment's polished appearance and structural integrity.

Stitches Used

While the PDF content does not specify individual stitch abbreviations or detailed stitch patterns, the construction method indicates the use of fundamental knitting stitches typical of seamless cardigan construction. The pattern involves cast-on techniques, increases for shaping the body and sleeves, and decreases for armhole and sleeve cap shaping. A crochet hook is listed as optional equipment for the shoulder cast-on, suggesting the pattern may incorporate a provisional cast-on or crochet cast-on method for added flexibility in the construction process.

Yarn and Materials

The primary yarn recommendation is Madelinetosh Merino DK, a DK weight (8-ply) yarn composed of 100% merino wool with yardage of 206 meters per 100 grams. Yarn requirements range from 1.5 skeins for the smallest sizes (3 and 6 months) to 4 skeins for the largest child size (10 years). An alternative yarn suggestion is provided: Fyberspates Scrumptious DK High Twist, also an 8-ply weight yarn with a blend of 55% merino and 45% silk, offering 211 meters per 100 grams. Both yarns provide similar yardage and weight specifications, making them suitable substitutes for the intended design.

Needles and Notions

  • Circular needles: 4.5 mm (US 7) in 80–100 cm (32–40 inches) length for the main body knitting
  • Circular needles: 3.5 mm (US 4) in 60–100 cm (24–40 inches) length for ribbed edgings, winding cast-on, and as an additional stitch holder
  • Stitch holder: For temporarily holding stitches during construction
  • Crochet hook: 3–4 mm (D–F size) for optional shoulder cast-on techniques
  • One button: For the single-button fastening

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with some experience beyond the absolute beginner level. The top-down seamless construction requires understanding of circular knitting, increases and decreases for shaping, and the ability to work with stitch holders. Knitters should be comfortable reading pattern instructions and managing multiple stitches on circular needles, though the straightforward design and lack of complex stitch patterns make it an achievable project for those progressing in their knitting skills.
